The Role
Working within the 1st Team Sports Science Department, the First Team Reconditioning Coach will lead the mid-to-end stage of the return-to-performance process, supporting injured players as they transition from rehabilitation into full team training and match play.
The role will work closely with Physiotherapists and wider multidisciplinary team to design, deliver and monitor individualised gym- and pitch-based programmes. The successful candidate will ensure players are progressively exposed to the physical and football-specific demands required to safely and effectively return to full performance.
In addition to their reconditioning responsibilities, when required the successful candidate will support the wider Performance Department through on-pitch warm-ups, strength and conditioning delivery, player monitoring and matchday preparation as required.
Key Responsibilities
Reconditioning
- Lead the reconditioning phase of the return-to-performance process in collaboration with Rehabilitation Physiotherapists and wider MDT
- Design, deliver and monitor individualised gym and pitch-based reconditioning programmes
- Progress players through the physical, technical and football-specific demands required for a successful return to full training and match play
- Manage the transition of players back into team training, ensuring appropriate individualised loading and progression
- Monitor player response to training and adapt programmes in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team
- Ensure clear alignment between rehabilitation, reconditioning and full performance throughout the return-to-performance pathway
Planning & Reporting
- Provide daily and weekly updates on the status and progression of reconditioning players, including anticipated return-to-train and return-to-play timelines
- Plan and manage weekly and monthly reconditioning schedules in line with player needs and team demands
- Maintain accurate records of player status, training exposure, programme progression and performance data
- Communicate relevant updates and recommendations clearly across the Performance and Medical Departments
Athletic Development Support
- Support the design and delivery of the First Team strength and conditioning programmes under the direction of the Head of Athletic Development
- Contribute to on-pitch warm-ups, physical conditioning and supplementary training alongside the multidisciplinary team
- Support individualised physical development and top-up programmes where required
- Assist with the delivery of matchday warm-ups and physical preparation as requested

Player Monitoring & Assessment
- Assist with the daily and weekly screening and monitoring of First Team players
- Support physical profiling and performance testing, including the collection, analysis and interpretation of relevant data
- Utilise GPS and other monitoring technologies to assess training load and player response
- Produce clear and insightful reports, identifying key findings and actionable recommendations for relevant staff
- Support the ongoing development of player physical profiles and return-to-performance benchmarks
Performance & Recovery Support
- Assist in the development and implementation of recovery, regeneration and performance strategies as required
- Support the integration of appropriate recovery and physical preparation strategies across the training week
- Contribute to the effective management, organisation and upkeep of performance facilities and equipment
Professional Development & Research
- Maintain all required professional qualifications and undertake relevant continuing professional development
- Engage in regular CPD to remain current with emerging research, technologies and best practice within football performance and reconditioning
- Organise and contribute to CPD activities within the Performance Department
- Lead and contribute to research, audit and innovation projects, with the aim of contributing to peer-reviewed scientific publications where appropriate
- Support the ongoing development of the Performance & Medical Department through the application of evidence-based practice
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Attend daily Performance and Medical Department meetings to align on player readiness, rehabilitation and return-to-performance strategies
- Build strong and effective working relationships with coaching staff, players and wider Club personnel
- Communicate confidently and appropriately within a multidisciplinary environment
- Promote a high-performance culture through consistently high standards, professionalism and positive behaviours
- Contribute to a collaborative environment where player welfare, performance and availability remain central to decision-making
Confidentiality & Compliance
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all Club, player and medical information
- Comply with all Club policies, procedures and professional standards
- Maintain accurate and appropriate documentation in accordance with Club and professional requirements
- Undertake any other duties reasonably requested by the Line Manager or Head of Department within the scope of the role

Person Specification
Skills & Experience
- Extensive experience delivering pitch- and gym-based conditioning and reconditioning programmes within elite sport
- Experience working with elite or professional footballers within a multidisciplinary Performance and Medical environment
- Excellent understanding of the physical, physiological and football-specific demands of the modern game
- Strong knowledge of athletic development and the ability to apply this effectively across the training week
- Demonstrable experience of managing the transition from rehabilitation through to full training and performance
- Experience analysing the demands of football using GPS, physical testing and other performance technologies
- Strong data analysis and reporting skills, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, actionable recommendations
- Ability to identify key performance priorities and translate these into effective planning, programming and coaching
- Excellent practical coaching ability across both gym- and pitch-based environments
- Strong understanding of training load management, physical profiling and player monitoring
Education & Qualifications
- BSc in Sports Science, Sport and Exercise Science or a related discipline (essential)
- MSc in Sports Science, Strength & Conditioning, Rehabilitation or a related discipline (essential)
- Recognised Strength & Conditioning qualification with evidence of ongoing professional education and development (essential)
- UKSCA accreditation (desirable)
- UEFA B Licence (desirable)
