Job Title: Fleet & Transport Manager

Reporting to: Business Unit General Manager

Business Unit: UK Plant & Equipment

Purpose of the Position

To support the Business Unit General Manager (BUGM) in managing the company fleet operations, ensuring full compliance with Operator Licence requirements, transport legislation, and internal standards.

The Fleet & Transport Manager will ensure all LGVs and commercial vehicles are operated safely, efficiently, and in compliance with legal obligations, whilst maximising fleet availability, controlling costs, and supporting operational delivery across the business.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Be accountable and lead by example for overseeing and managing all fleet operations, including compliance, safety, maintenance, and performance of LGVs and commercial vehicles.
  • Ensure full compliance with all UK transport legislation and Operator Licence requirements, including Drivers’ Hours Regulations, Working Time Directive, GB domestic rules, and Driver CPC.
  • Responsible for managing the Operator Licence, ensuring it is fully compliant and kept up to date, including the addition and removal of vehicles to always maintain the correct licence authorisations.
  • Be accountable for fleet safety performance, working closely with internal team members to ensure safety remains the highest priority and promoting a strong safety culture across all drivers and transport staff.
  • Ensure all vehicles are maintained, inspected, and serviced in line with legal requirements and company procedures, coordinating MOT planning, servicing schedules, and repairs to minimise downtime.
  • Manage all Road Traffic Accidents (RTA), insurance claims, and incident reporting, ensuring investigations are completed and vehicles are returned to service efficiently.
  • Work effectively with internal teams, external suppliers, and OEMs to optimise vehicle uptime, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of maintenance.
  • Utilise fleet management systems and telematics to monitor vehicle performance, analyse trends, and produce reports to drive continuous improvement.
  • Maintain effective relationships with internal departments, customers, and suppliers to ensure service delivery meets operational requirements.
  • Ensure all fleet and drivers' records are maintained, and compliance documentation are accurate, up to date, and audit-ready at all times.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, embracing innovation and new technologies to enhance fleet efficiency and sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with all company Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality (SHEQ) policies and procedures at all times.
  • Undertake any other duties as required to meet the needs of the business.

Person Specification

Qualifications and experience

  • Proven experience in a Fleet / Transport Manager role within a UK Operator Licence environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of UK transport legislation and compliance requirements, including Operators Licences.
  • Strong understanding of Drivers’ Hours Regulations, Working Time Directive, GB Domestic Rules, and Driver CPC.
  • Experience managing LGV and commercial vehicle fleets.
  • Proven experience of maintenance planning, supplier coordination, and vehicle lifecycle management.
  • Excellent organisational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
  • Full UK Driving Licence

Desirable criteria

  • Transport Manager CPC (Road Haulage) or equivalent experience.
  • Experience managing Telematics and Fleet Management Systems.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
