Flexible Packaging Application Engineer
We are seeking a Flexible Packaging Application Engineer to provide technical expertise to develop, qualify, and commercialise flexible packaging solutions for food applications.
Working closely with customers, sales teams, suppliers, and internal functions, the engineer delivers technical in line support to deliver customer’s needs.
This customer-facing role supports projects from initial concept and material selection through laboratory evaluation, production trials, troubleshooting, validation, and market launch.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide on-site and remote technical support during material qualification, machine setup, production trials, and commercialization.
- Troubleshoot issues such as poor sealing, leakage, delamination, and barrier failure.
- Plan and conduct laboratory testing, pilot trials, customer-line trials, and industrial scale-up activities.
- Analyse trial and test results, identify root causes, and recommend corrective or preventive actions.
- Collaborate with customers’ packaging, engineering, quality, food-safety, procurement, operations, and product-development teams.
- Partner with sales colleagues to identify customer needs, present technical solutions, support new-business development, and strengthen customer relationships.
- Prepare technical proposals, application guidelines, trial protocols, product recommendations and technical reports.
- Ensure proposed packaging solutions comply with applicable food-contact, migration, quality, labelling, and environmental requirements.
- Support shelf-life studies, distribution testing and risk assessments
- Deliver technical presentations and training to customers, commercial teams, converters, and internal stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate records of customer projects, trials, recommendations, complaints, and technical outcomes.
- Travel to customer, supplier, and manufacturing locations as required.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in packaging engineering, food engineering, materials science, or a related discipline.
- At least 3 years of experience in flexible packaging, food packaging, converting, or a related manufacturing sector.
- Practical knowledge of flexible films, laminates, adhesives, coatings, printing processes, and heat-sealing technologies.
- Understanding of food-product protection, barrier properties, shelf life, seal integrity, and packaging-processes.
- Experience conducting technical trials and troubleshooting packaging performance on commercial in line equipment.
- Ability to interpret technical data and communicate recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong analytical, project-management, presentation, and customer-service skills.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating effectively across commercial and technical teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel regularly based on business needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with extrusion, coextrusion, lamination, flexographic or gravure printing, pouch converting, thermoforming, or form-fill-seal systems.
- Knowledge of oxygen, moisture, and chemical barrier requirements.
- Experience with polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamide, PET, EVOH, aluminium foil, metallized films, paper-based laminates, and recyclable mono-material structures.
- Familiarity with HACCP and BRCGS food-safety bodies.
- Knowledge of applicable FDA, EU, UK food-contact regulations.
- Experience with packaging test methods
- Previous experience in a customer-facing technical service or application-development role.
