Flexible Support Worker – Mental Health Recovery
Colchester, Essex | £26,298.11 per year | Permanent | 37.5 hours per week

A Star Care is recruiting on behalf of a client for a Flexible Support Worker based in Colchester, with work across services in North East Essex. You will support adults with enduring mental health needs as they move from hospital into the community and progress along their recovery journey.
This role combines mental health recovery support with practical help around housing, everyday living, and community involvement. You will work alongside people to identify their own goals, build confidence, and develop the skills to live more independently.
What you’ll do
- Build trusting, professional relationships with clients, respecting their choices, backgrounds, and individual needs.
- Develop and review personalized, outcome-focused support plans, using a Recovery Star approach.
- Help clients sustain their tenancies, manage housing-related responsibilities, and plan for moving towards greater independence.
- Support access to benefits advice, health services, education, volunteering, employment, and community activities.
- Work with mental health teams, housing partners, substance misuse services, and other professionals.
- Recognize changes in wellbeing, assess risks, and escalate concerns appropriately.
- Support people with co-occurring mental health and substance misuse needs.
- Maintain accurate records, risk assessments, and clear handovers.
- Complete relevant property, health, and safety checks and report repairs.
- Monitor medication where required within the role; medication administration is not part of this position.

What we’re looking for
- Experience supporting adults with enduring mental health needs or in a similar field.
- Experience helping people progress towards independence within a planned recovery pathway.
- Understanding of housing management, dual diagnosis, and complex needs.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and relevant housing legislation.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to work independently, manage your workload, and contribute to a team.
- Sound professional boundaries, respectful judgment, and an inclusive approach.
- Willingness to use supervision, reflect on your practice, and take part in training.
Direct experience supporting people with dual diagnosis and complex needs is desirable.
Hours and location
This is a permanent, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week across a seven-day rota.
- Early shifts: 08:00–16:00
- Late shifts: 13:30–21:30
- One working weekend every two weeks
- Based in Colchester, with work across North East Essex services
- Alternative shifts may occasionally be required to meet service needs
