Our Pay, Benefits And Culture
Starting salary for this role is £39,152 (pro rata for part-time colleagues) and the pay band range is up to £46,142. The role is subject to Local Government Pay Award increases as agreed by the employer and trade unions each year.
This role sits within a well defined pay band, offering clear progression as you grow your career at BCP. Without exception all new starters begin at the entry point of the band, ensuring fairness and consistency across the organisation. Internal colleagues are appointed at the bottom of the band, unless moving within the same profession and skill level, where the pay band is the same they can be appointed to the existing pay point.

South West Flood & Coastal (SWFaC)
South West Flood & Coastal (SWFaC) is a centre of expertise in Flooding & Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM), hosted by BCP Council. Its approach is to minimise the risk of flooding and coastal erosion by working with local communities and partners, while aligning staff, skills and resources to provide a co-ordinated service.
Since September 2021, it has been providing support and guidance to other local authorities in the South West including New Forest, Dorset, East Devon, Exeter, North Somerset, Teignbridge and Torridge.
In May 2024, East Devon District Council (EDDC) was the first to join the SWFaC shared service. Since then, SWFaC has provided new coastal defences in Seaton and a 100-year beach management plan for Exmouth. It is currently progressing a beach and cliff management plan for Budleigh Salterton and a multi-million pound coastal defence scheme in Sidmouth.
The proposal for Dorset Council to join the South-West Flood & Coastal shared service was approved by BCP Council’s Cabinet on 26 March, following approval by Dorset Council Cabinet on 03 March.

Role Purpose
The role manages small or low complexity flood and coastal projects, and for larger projects provides high level advice or diagnoses complex problems and/or service issues to support the effective management and delivery of specific projects in the capital and assets programmes. For larger projects this will include being project support to the project manager, administrating project management documentation and workflows and taking on discreet packages of work. It’s an opportunity to shape and manage significant projects like Poole Bridge to Hunger Hill Flood Defence Scheme and Sidmouth & East Beach Coastal Defence Scheme, alongside qualified and passionate colleagues.

Main Responsibilities
- Use project management practices, including project planning, reporting, and change control, to manage the effective delivery of smaller projects or discrete work packages within a larger project, to support wider programme goals and realisation of benefits. This may involve co-ordinating project teams and supervising project work execution.
- Engage in consultation and communication activities to promote the project and work of the business units, and to enable stakeholder or service user input into the delivery and shaping of projects.
- Co-ordinate research and data collation and undertake analysis to identify trends, patterns and opportunities for the particular project or programme, to support outcomes, both in the community and internally.
- Contribute to the identification and implementation of continuous improvements in area of specialism to support the quality or performance of programme/project management and delivery of fit for purpose initiatives.
- Plan and carry out regular project reviews using standard methodologies in order to identify, assess and take action to mitigate risks to programme/project success.
- Build relationships with stakeholders and customers in order to enable smooth project delivery, to resolve queries or problems, and identify opportunities for improvements in service provision, joint working, and innovation.
- Support the management and monitoring of funding and finances, to ensure that the projects are delivered within budget and that funding is spent in accordance with regulations and requirements.
- Assist in preparation of bids for external funding to help deliver projects and developments in service or facilities provision.
The Ideal Candidate
- Degree or equivalent specialist experience in a relevant discipline.
- Relevant project management qualification, e.g. PRINCE2 or equivalent.
- Knowledge of project management methodologies.
- Broad understanding of area of specialism within which the role will be working.
- Experience of working in projects in leading or assisting a major piece of work.
- Experience of working with stakeholders, keeping them informed on projects, and providing guidance
- Experience of monitoring budgets.
- Experience of writing and presenting reports to senior officers and stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively with a range of stakeholders.
- Ability to analyse and present information including statistical data and prepare reports.
- Ability to co-ordinate and deliver discrete project work packages
