Job title: Forensic Healthcare Professional (RGN / Paramedic) - Cleveland Custody Suite

Job type: Full-time, 42 hours per week

Location: Cleveland OR Durham

£500 joining bonus on starting, plus a further £500 after you successfully pass your 6-month probationary period (£1,000 in total)

PHL Group are looking for a Forensic Healthcare Professional to work in a custody suite covering Cleveland, alongside police officers, assessing and treating individuals detained in police custody. Full training will be provided.

Please note: you must be a registered RGN or Paramedic.

Could you identify if a detainee is suffering from a mental health condition? If they are uncooperative or lacking diabetes medication? If they are a substance misuser or suffering from a head injury?

Our Forensic Healthcare Professionals assess and address the health needs of detained persons and carry out forensic medical examinations, gathering evidence for use in the criminal justice system.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct clinical assessments, identify and implement appropriate interventions, and collect forensic samples
  • Deliver the forensic practitioner service in line with the Codes of Practice of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and locally agreed protocols
  • Keep accurate, complete and contemporaneous notes, including the recording of injuries, and log all activity on the systems in use
  • Advise and support Custody Officers in determining the healthcare needs of detainees and the priorities of care
  • Seek telephone advice and refer cases to the Consultant FME when required
  • Provide a professional, responsive and caring service to detained persons, supporting the Custody Sergeant and Officers throughout the time in custody
  • Determine fitness to be detained, fitness to be released, fitness to be interviewed and competence to understand charge
  • Assess alcohol and drug intoxication and withdrawal

Essential criteria:

  • Registered Nurse or Paramedic with a minimum of 3 years' service
  • Full membership of the NMC or HCPC (registration required)
  • Full UK driving licence with access to your own vehicle for business use
  • Competent in oral and written English
  • Continuously resident in the UK for at least 3 years
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Ability to be cleared through the Police Vetting system: Level 2 NPPV clearance
  • A DBS check is required for this post. PHL will undertake an initial check at the appropriate level on appointment
