Formulation Scientist

Location: Birstall, UK (Hybrid role with office-based working as the norm and flexibility to work remotely when appropriate)

Shape the future of pet nutrition

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our R&D Innovation team as a Formulation Scientist playing a critical role in delivering innovation, renovation, business continuity, and value optimization projects across our Pet Nutrition portfolio.

In this role, you'll own product formulation and recipe development for Dry and Care & Treats products, ensuring recipes deliver against nutritional, quality, food safety, cost, and performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own recipe formulation and optimization activities across a portfolio of products, ensuring compliance with nutritional, regulatory, food safety, and quality standards.
  • Lead formulation support for innovation, renovation, business continuity, and value leadership projects, delivering against cost, quality, and timeline objectives.
  • Partner with manufacturing sites to ensure recipes are feasible, robust, and deliver expected product performance in factory environments.
  • Act as a key technical contact for formulation-related quality incidents, non-conformances, and product improvement opportunities.
  • Drive continuous optimization of existing recipes to improve cost, quality, sustainability, and performance.
  • Maintain accurate formulation data within relevant systems and ensure governance standards are consistently met.
  • Collaborate with regional and global teams to share best practices, technical learnings, and formulation expertise.
  • Support capability building by providing coaching, training, and technical guidance to colleagues.

Requirements

  • Degree (Or equivalent) in Food Science, Chemistry, Engineering, or another relevant scientific discipline.
  • Experience in formulation, product development, process development, quality, or food safety within an FMCG manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of nutrition, quality, and food safety principles.
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects and influencing cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience working closely with manufacturing sites and supporting factory-based product delivery.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
