Formulation Scientist - Grade 7

Materials Characterisation & Formulation Scientist (Contingent Worker) - 18 Months

ROLE SUMMARY

The Materials Characterisation Team (MCT) within Pharmaceutical's Global Manufacturing & Supply division is seeking an experienced scientist with a strong background in pharmaceutical formulation and drug product development to support material supplier change assessments and product performance prediction activities.

This role will focus on evaluating the impact of raw material and API variability on drug product manufacturability and performance through the application of Science of Scale principles, predictive modelling approaches, and targeted laboratory experimentation.

The successful candidate will utilise small-scale experimental platforms and computational modelling tools to understand and predict how material attributes influence manufacturing and product performance across the pharmaceutical development lifecycle. Activities will include simulating large-scale manufacturing processes at laboratory scale, assessing process robustness, and supporting risk-based decision making for material supplier changes.

This position requires a combination of practical formulation expertise, process understanding, data interpretation skills, and scientific judgement to translate laboratory findings into meaningful predictions for commercial manufacturing operations.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and execute laboratory studies to evaluate the impact of material variability and supplier changes on drug product performance.
  • Apply Science of Scale principles to develop representative small-scale models of pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.
  • Utilise computational modelling and data-driven approaches to predict process and product performance during material change assessments.
  • Design and perform formulation-based performance prediction studies to assess manufacturing and quality risks.
  • Investigate relationships between material attributes, process parameters, and critical quality attributes.
  • Develop and execute experimental programmes covering:
    • Powder blending and content uniformity
    • Granulation processes (wet and dry granulation)
    • Powder flow and feeding behaviour
    • Tablet compression and compaction performance
    • Tablet sticking and manufacturing challenges
    • Film coating performance
    • Stability and product robustness assessments
  • Interpret experimental and modelling data to understand scale-dependent manufacturing behaviour.
  • Collaborate with formulation scientists, manufacturing engineers, analytical scientists and project teams to provide scientific recommendations.
  • Document laboratory work in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), departmental procedures and applicable SOPs.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports and presentations summarising findings, conclusions and recommendations.
  • Track project progress and communicate updates to programme leads and stakeholder teams.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and laboratory excellence activities including My Green Lab and 5S programmes.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
