Wage: £16,640 to £26,436.80, depending on your age

Training course: Formworker (level 2)
Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 5:30pm, with two half hour breaks. There may be some Saturday shifts, available from 7:30am to 1:00pm. 40 hours a week

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

As a Formwork Apprentice, you will support site teams with a range of groundwork activities, including:

  • Assist in make formwork and falsework 'casts' or moulds to form concrete items like foundations, staircases, beams, columns and walls
  • Assist in read and interpret site drawings, instructions and plans
  • Measure, shape and cut materials like wood and metal
  • Build wooden structures using power and hand tools
  • Assemble pre-made metal frames, scaffolding and platforms
  • Assist in quality checking casts to make sure shape and measurements are correct
  • Work with other site workers to pour concrete once set, take formwork apart to be reused
  • Move, handle and store materials safely
  • Perform site clean-up

What you'll learn

  • Communicate in a clear and appropriate manner (verbal, written, body language). Adjusts communication to suit different situations, individuals or teams.
  • Apply general workplace health, safety and welfare requirements when undertaking construction formworking/falseworking activities.
  • Practice safe working techniques for moving, lifting and handling traditional and proprietary formwork system; which will include working at heights and using access equipment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of planning and able to undertake different methods of construction used to build structures productively.
  • Competent to read, interpret and apply information from drawings, specifications and construction information.
  • Takes ownership of allocated projects and effectively manages own time.
  • Use a range of methods used to communicate workplace requirements effectively and demonstrate how key personnel should communicate effectively within a team.
  • Form and assemble horizontal and vertical formwork as per design drawings and repair, erect and strike formworking.
  • Erect, Strike formwork/ falsework and its components for a range of applications including wall, slabs/bases, columns, beams and precast units to support concrete.
  • Competent to safely use, store and maintain hand tools, power tools and ancillary equipment.

Training schedule

You will work towards a:
Level 2 Formwork Apprenticeship Standard
Training will be delivered through a combination of on-site learning and attendance one week a month at Kilnbridge's chosen apprenticeship provider.

Requirements

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in: English (grade 4)
  • Maths (grade 4)
  • CSCS Card in: Labour (grade Green)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.
