Forward Deployed Engineer Engineer – AI & Defence
Salary: £90,000–£100,000 basic salary + up to 25% performance-based bonus Security Clearance: Must be eligible for SC clearance Sector: AI / Defence / National Security
About the Company
Sellick Partnership is working with an innovative AI defence company developing advanced artificial intelligence capabilities for customers operating across Defence, Security and Resilience.
The organisation brings together experienced technologists and domain specialists to build AI solutions that help customers process complex information and turn large volumes of multimodal data into actionable intelligence.
With foundations across natural language processing, computational linguistics and graph technology, the business is increasingly developing capabilities across agentic AI, knowledge representation and next-generation sovereign AI.
The Role
We are looking for an experienced Forward Deployed Engineer to design, build and deploy sophisticated software and AI capabilities that solve complex, real-world customer problems across Defence, Security and Resilience.
This is a highly technical, hands-on position spanning software engineering, backend development, cloud infrastructure and AI/ML.
You will work closely with customers, analysts, engineers and AI/ML researchers to understand mission requirements and turn them into secure, scalable and deployable capabilities.
The role would suit an experienced engineer who enjoys solving ambiguous technical problems, taking ownership of solutions and working closely with end users rather than operating solely within a traditional software development environment.
Key Responsibilities
As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you will:
- Own backend, infrastructure and AI/ML platform components supporting mission deployments.
- Design, build and deploy scalable backend services, APIs and data pipelines.
- Work with multimodal data including text, multimedia and geospatial sources.
- Develop AI-driven capabilities incorporating agentic workflows, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Large Language Models (LLMs) and advanced Natural Language Processing.
- Collaborate with AI/ML researchers to operationalise models, from fine-tuning through to deployment within government environments.
- Engineer secure and resilient solutions that meet HMG compliance and assurance requirements.
- Work directly with mission owners, analysts and end users to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Conduct user testing and deliver deployable capabilities into customer environments.
- Identify opportunities for newly developed capabilities to be scaled and productised into reusable software workflows.
- Lead and contribute to technical initiatives spanning multiple systems and engineering teams.
- Travel to customer locations when required, with travel potentially accounting for up to 20% of the role.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
