Founder's Associate
Referment is working with an early-stage biotechnology company developing a new approach to drug discovery to hire a Founder's Associate.
Working directly with the founders, you'll take ownership of some of the company's most important operational and strategic priorities across hiring, special projects, operations, fundraising and communications.
This is a broad, high-ownership position within a deeply technical organisation. You won't be expected to be a scientist, but you will need the intellectual curiosity and scientific literacy to understand complex life-science concepts and work credibly alongside researchers, investors and external partners.
The Role
Your responsibilities will evolve with the company's priorities and include:
- Working directly with the founders on high-priority projects.
- Running hiring processes and helping build scalable recruitment systems.
- Taking special projects from initial problem definition through to implementation.
- Owning project budgets, milestones and external stakeholders.
- Supporting finance, procurement, legal and HR processes.
- Building and improving internal operating processes as the company scales.
- Preparing investor and partner materials.
- Supporting fundraising activity.
- Drafting grant applications and other external communications.
- Helping shape the company's public communications.
- Using AI and automation to improve internal workflows and accelerate analysis.
- Identifying problems proactively and taking responsibility for solving them.

What We're Looking For
We're looking for someone with:
- A strong academic background and the ability to operate comfortably around complex life-science topics.
- Evidence of taking ownership of difficult projects from beginning to end.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- The ability to work from first principles rather than relying on established processes.
- Exceptional written communication and presentation skills.
- Strong attention to detail and consistently high-quality output.
- Excellent judgement and the ability to handle sensitive information.
- The ability to manage several unrelated priorities simultaneously.
- A high level of independence and personal ownership.
- Strong practical understanding of AI tools and their application to research, analysis and operational workflows.

Particularly Relevant Backgrounds Could Include
- Life-sciences consulting or strategy
- Biotech or healthcare investment
- Early-stage biotech operations
- Scientific or technical research followed by a move towards commercial roles
- PhD or doctoral research within a relevant scientific discipline
Experience building something from scratch, whether that's a process, function, research programme or operational capability, would be particularly interesting.
Experience owning recruitment processes, procurement or significant vendor relationships would also be valuable.
This could suit an existing Founder's Associate, Chief of Staff Associate, Strategy & Operations Associate, Life Sciences Consultant, Biotech Investment Associate or scientifically trained operator looking to work directly with the founders of an early-stage biotech company.
The successful candidate will have significant exposure to every part of building the business and considerable ownership from the outset.
