Company Description
NODI Energy is a Y Combinator-backed energy tech company building the physical layer of the distributed grid. Our first product is a modular plug-in battery that ships directly to customers, deploys in minutes, and requires no electrician, rewiring, or planning approval. NODI starts from a simple belief: the grid crisis will not be solved by software alone. It requires building in atoms — hardware that can be manufactured, shipped, plugged in, controlled, and aggregated into real dispatchable capacity. We begin with renters, homes, and SMEs locked out of traditional storage, then turn every deployed unit into part of a virtual power network. Tesla Powerwall installs a battery in a house. NODI builds grid capacity from the wall socket up.
The Role
- Work directly alongside both co-founders as a core member of the founding team
- Own the hardware: our plug-in home battery and the edge orchestration box that connects it to the grid
- Build from zero to one: there's no inherited design system or test bench, you'll set the standards

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
What You'll Own
- Hardware design: lead electrical and system-level design of the battery and edge device, from current units to the next revision
- Design for manufacture: take the product from small-batch builds to repeatable production, working with contract manufacturers and component suppliers
- Cost and supply chain: drive BOM optimisation, component selection and second-sourcing so unit economics improve as volume grows
- Testing and reliability: build the validation, safety and field-reliability testing that proves the hardware works in real homes over years
- Certification and compliance: own the path to the safety, grid-connection and electrical standards needed in each market we sell into
- Field performance: diagnose issues from deployed units, feed learnings back into the design and support pilot deployments when hardware is the bottleneck
- Hardware–software interface: work with the software side on firmware, telemetry and control so the device performs as part of a virtual power plant

What We're Looking For
- Strong electrical or electronics engineering foundation, with hands-on experience shipping physical products
- Experience with battery systems, power electronics or energy hardware (BMS, inverters, chargers or similar)
- Has taken a product from prototype through to manufacturing at least once
- Comfortable owning decisions end to end without a large team or established processes
- High ownership: you'd rather be on the bench or on site fixing it than writing a ticket about it
Nice to Have
- Experience at an early-stage hardware startup (employee #1–10)
- Familiarity with UK/EU certification and grid-connection requirements
- Embedded firmware experience
- Background in energy or climate
Why Join
- Founding-team role with real scope and direct access to the founders
- Hardware already in the field with paying customers, so you're scaling a product that works, not guessing
- Define how a grid-native hardware company designs, builds and ships from day one
