About Rheya Labs
Rheya Labs is building smart, telemetry-driven Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for critical water infrastructure. We combine edge analytics and energy arbitrage with field-proven hardware resilience to lower carbon footprints and operational costs across UK utility pumping stations.
We are backed by over £500k in funding, have secured our first commercial trial with a major UK water utility, and are in active discussions with four other water companies.
The Role
We are looking for a pragmatic, hands-on Lead Electrical Engineer based in or near Leeds to take immediate ownership of our hardware platform. We are already progressing a baseline hardware design, and you will lead the integration, BESS specifications, and utility site deployments to bring it to market.
Depending on your background and commitment level, this role can be structured as a Co-Founder or a Founding Lead Engineer.

What You’ll Do
- Hardware Ownership: Take ownership of an ongoing hardware design and lead technical specification, assembly, and rapid prototyping of custom BESS units, power electronics, and edge telemetry gateways.
- Utility Deployments: Move fast to oversee physical and electrical site integrations for our upcoming utility trial and pilot deployments.
- Supply Chain & Partners: Work directly with engineering partners, manufacturing suppliers, and component vendors to move designs efficiently from the drawing board to field execution.
- Compliance & Safety: Ensure hardware meets UK grid compliance (G98/G99), industrial safety standards, and utility site requirements.
What We’re Looking For
- Hands-on capability: You enjoy rolling up your sleeves for bench testing, prototyping, and site visits. Ideal location would be close to Leeds but this isn't a requirement.
- Technical Background: Degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
- Domain Experience: Exposure to battery storage systems, power conversion, inverters, or industrial control panels.
- Grid & Utility Knowledge: Familiarity with UK utility standards, DNO grid connections, or industrial automation is a strong plus.
- Founder Mindset: Self-directed, comfortable with fast-paced iteration, and motivated by real-world environmental impact.
