Software Engineer – ML Engineer (Elite AI/ML Specialist)

Spectrum collects data from an organization’s code, docs, and issues, and organizes knowledge in a unified ontology that AI agents can efficiently search through and reason over. We aim to revolutionize the semantic layer for software-building organizations, aligning tech specs with live code and becoming the single source of truth for all product and architectural knowledge.

We’re recruiting a top-tier ML Engineer who will help shape Spectrum’s future by leading our AI and ML engineering stack and defining the research agenda.
Your technical vision and design decisions will directly influence the product’s trajectory and success.
Key Responsibilities
Beneath Spectrum’s technical backbone, you’ll own and shape critical areas:
- Design and build the ML/LLM pipeline for data ingestion, knowledge extraction, retrieval, and reasoning.
- Develop datasets, metrics, and automation pipelines that enable meaningful system improvements.
- Architect and refine agents for:
- Contextual knowledge retrieval
- Extracted code/documentation alignment
- Prompt engineering and model selection strategies
- Implement scalable inference optimisations for RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) workloads.
- Establish and implement MLOps practices, including:
- Orchestration (Airflow, Kubeflow, etc.)
- Observability frameworks
- Experiment tracking
- Collaborate cross-functionally:
- With engineering teams to refactor the architecture.
- With JetBrains Research on defining and executing long-term AI priorities.
- Recruitment and team culture:
- Define hiring criteria for ML engineers.
- Grow a cohesive, high-impact AI/ML team.

Requirements
Essential criteria:
- Proven track record as an ML/AI Lead.
- Five+ years in ML/AI systems, with two+ years specialising in:
- LLM architectures and fine-tuning approaches.
- Prompt engineering, curation, and evaluation.
- Agentic frameworks (e.g. LangChain, LlamaIndex, smolagents, or similar).
- Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns using vector databases.
- Hands-on deployment experience:
- APIs (e.g. OpenAI, Anthropic) and open-source models.
- Python proficiency + Kotlin experience highly appreciated.
- Strong communication skills for explaining technical concepts at multiple levels.
- Fluent written/verbal English (core collaboration tool).

Highly desirable (not mandatory):
- Background in ontologies, knowledge graphs, or graph-based reasoning.
- Experience with:
- Code analysis tools, dev tip cafeterias).
- Multi-agent systems or divergent workflows.
- Zero-to-one startup challenges (fast iteration, validation).
- Product-led AI strategy: ensuring AI delivers measurable business value.
- Open-source contributions to ML/software development libraries.
