Founding Staff Mobile Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Founding Staff Mobile Engineer based in United Kingdom.

Join a high-impact platform team and take ownership of a mobile product from the ground up. You’ll lead the full rebuild of a critical workforce app used by restaurant employees for everyday operational tasks. The role combines deep React Native engineering with architecture, product thinking, UX ownership, and platform strategy. Reliability is central, with the app expected to perform on low-spec devices, limited connectivity, and challenging real-world environments. You’ll shape the technical foundation, design system, and development practices that enable future engineers and AI-powered coding workflows to move quickly without compromising quality. This is a true builder role with significant autonomy, visibility, and influence across the wider engineering organisation.

Accountabilities

As the first dedicated Staff Mobile Engineer, you’ll own the mobile platform end to end, from assessing the existing application and defining the architecture to delivering a production rebuild and evolving it into a platform for future development.

  • Assess the current mobile application, define the target architecture, plan the migration, and deliver an MVP within one to two quarters.
  • Build and maintain a reliable React Native application using TypeScript, with a strong focus on performance, scalability, and maintainability.
  • Design mobile experiences that remain dependable on low-spec devices, limited connectivity, and challenging real-world conditions.
  • Implement offline caching and other resilience strategies to support reliable workflows when connectivity is inconsistent.
  • Build and maintain native mobile capabilities such as push notifications, camera-based document and receipt scanning, and geolocation-verified clock-ins.
  • Make independent product and UX decisions, balancing user experience, technical quality, scope, and delivery timelines.
  • Establish a modular React Native design system and shared component architecture that supports consistent, high-quality development.
  • Structure the codebase and development workflows so AI coding agents can contribute effectively while maintaining strong engineering and UX standards.
  • Grow the rebuilt application into a scalable mobile platform that other engineers can confidently build upon.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, Engineering, and other teams to define priorities, solve problems, and deliver impactful features.
  • Maintain high standards for application performance, API usage, webhooks, testing, reliability, and overall code quality.
  • Serve as an outward-facing technical leader for the mobile platform, communicating clearly with engineers and stakeholders across the organisation.
  • Use AI tools to accelerate development while maintaining a high bar for craftsmanship, reliability, and product quality.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Requirements

You’ll be a strong fit if you combine deep mobile engineering expertise with strong product judgment, architectural experience, and the independence to take ownership of a platform from the ground up.

  • Deep professional experience with React Native and TypeScript, including ownership of production mobile applications from start to finish.
  • Experience building native mobile capabilities such as push notifications, camera access, geolocation, or similar platform-specific functionality.
  • Strong understanding of mobile application architecture, performance, reliability, testing, and scalable engineering practices.
  • Experience building applications with significant real-world usage and high volumes of daily activity.
  • Ability to work comfortably across the stack, including reading and lightly extending backend services such as FastAPI when required.
  • Familiarity with React web applications and the ability to contribute when mobile initiatives require broader product or engineering support.
  • Experience delivering a greenfield application or leading a significant legacy migration, with the ability to explain architectural, testing, and migration decisions.
  • Strong product and UX instincts, with evidence of making meaningful product or design decisions rather than simply implementing predefined specifications.
  • Comfortable making independent UX and scope decisions when dedicated design support is limited.
  • Experience using AI coding tools or agents to accelerate development while maintaining high standards for quality and consistency.
  • Experience creating design systems, component libraries, or other reusable foundations that support scalable development.
  • Strong ownership mindset, with a focus on solving problems and delivering outcomes rather than simply completing assigned tickets.
  • Clear and confident written and verbal communication, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a distributed organisation.
  • Experience with people technology, HR technology, B2C/consumer-grade applications, hospitality, food service, or other operational industries is a plus.
  • Some hands-on familiarity with native APIs such as Swift or Kotlin is advantageous, though not required.
  • Right to work in the UK or EU without requiring visa sponsorship.
