Burlington English Freelance Item Writer
Burlington English is seeking a freelance item writer to develop content for CEFR-aligned English exams. Our portfolio includes General English, Business English, Academic English, and Young Learner exams. The writer will initially focus on General English, with opportunities to contribute across our full range of products.
Responsibilities
The work includes:
- Developing assessment content across all four skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing
- Writing reading passages, listening scripts, and prompts at specified CEFR levels
- Writing multiple-choice questions with plausible distractors and a single unambiguously correct answer
- Writing items that assess specified reading or listening subskills (e.g., main idea, detail, inference)
- Following test specifications, templates, style guides, and source requirements
- Reviewing content for fairness, accessibility, cultural sensitivity, and potential bias
- Revising materials in response to editorial feedback

Requirements
The ideal candidate will have experience in English language assessment, item writing, test development, or a closely related field. Excellent written English, strong familiarity with CEFR levels, and close attention to detail are essential. Experience writing for different candidate populations, (e.g., young learners, business, academic) preferred.

Position Details
This is a remote, freelance position. Work will be assigned on a project basis, with the potential for ongoing collaboration. All assessment materials must be treated as confidential.
