Role Description
We are seeking a reliable and professional Freelance McKenzie Friend / Court Support Consultant to join our growing network on a self-employed, assignment-by-assignment basis.
The primary purpose of this role is to attend court hearings in person with BLS clients and provide appropriate McKenzie Friend support. This includes providing moral and practical support, taking detailed hearing notes, assisting clients with organising and navigating court papers, and quietly providing appropriate assistance during proceedings where permitted.
The successful candidate may also:
- Review relevant case papers and BLS hearing instructions before attendance;
- Liaise with the BLS case handler before and after hearings;
- Prepare accurate post-hearing attendance notes;
- Assist clients with the organisation of court documents and bundles;
- Provide practical support to clients before and during hearings;
- Maintain accurate records of work undertaken; and
- Maintain strict confidentiality and professional standards at all times.

The role does not carry automatic rights of audience or rights to conduct litigation. The successful candidate must understand and remain within the proper scope of the McKenzie Friend role and any directions given by the court.
Assignments will be offered according to location, availability, experience and client requirements. There are no guaranteed minimum hours or assignments.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a McKenzie Friend, paralegal, legal assistant, law graduate or within a court/legal environment is desirable.
- Knowledge of Family Court proceedings is particularly advantageous.
- Understanding of civil proceedings would also be beneficial.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to produce clear and accurate hearing/attendance notes.
- Excellent organisation and attention to detail.
- Professional and confident manner when attending court.
- Ability to support clients who may be vulnerable, anxious or unfamiliar with court proceedings.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
- Reliable and punctual with the ability to travel independently to courts within the relevant region.
- Familiarity with electronic bundles, court documents and remote communication platforms is advantageous.
- A law degree or other legal qualification is desirable but not essential where the candidate has suitable practical experience.

Wales vacancy
Applicants should be based in Wales or within convenient travelling distance and able to attend courts across their agreed area of coverage.

Remuneration
Competitive fixed fee per assignment, with agreed travel arrangements where applicable.
