Freelance Project Director / Director – Data Centres

Location: London | Hybrid

The Opportunity

A leading international project and cost consultancy is seeking an experienced Freelance Project Director to lead the delivery of a major Data Centre project in London.

Currently at Stage 1, the role offers the opportunity to shape the project from the outset, establishing the delivery strategy, governance, programme and consultant team before leading it through design, procurement, construction and commissioning.

Acting as the consultancy's senior client-facing lead, you will provide strategic project leadership while building strong relationships across the client and wider project team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the project from Stage 1 through design, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
  • Act as the senior client interface, providing strategic advice and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships.
  • Establish project governance, delivery strategy, programme, risk management and reporting.
  • Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams, consultants, contractors and specialist suppliers.
  • Maintain oversight of programme, cost, quality, risk and key project decisions.
  • Work closely with cost management and technical teams to ensure alignment between scope, budget and programme.
  • Provide senior oversight of Data Centre MEP, utilities, resilience and commissioning requirements.
  • Support procurement strategy, contractor appointments and subsequent construction delivery.
  • Drive project performance, proactively identifying and resolving key risks and issues.
  • Support business development activity, leveraging client and industry relationships to identify opportunities and contribute to winning new work.

About You

  • Established Project Director / Senior Project Director with a strong track record delivering major, technically complex projects.
  • Significant Data Centre / Mission Critical experience.
  • Previous experience within a project management, construction or multidisciplinary consultancy.
  • Strong client-facing capability with the ability to operate credibly at senior stakeholder level.
  • Experience taking projects from early-stage definition through design, procurement and delivery.
  • Strong understanding of Data Centre MEP infrastructure, resilience and commissioning.
  • Commercially astute with strong programme, risk and project controls experience.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Relevant professional qualification such as MRICS, MCIOB, MAPM, CEng or equivalent would be advantageous.
