Personal & Corporate Tax | Remote / Flexible | Work provided as required
Barnaby Cecil Tax is looking for an experienced Tax Compliance Specialist to support a new specialist tax practice alongside Barnaby Cecil Financial Planning.
About the Role
This role is deliberately focused. We are looking for someone who enjoys tax compliance and wants to concentrate on preparing and submitting accurate tax returns, rather than business development, client meetings, or high-level tax advisory work.
If your ideal working day involves getting a well-prepared client file, opening the tax software, and working methodically through returns, this could suit you extremely well.
The Work
Initially, the work is expected to include:
- Personal Self Assessment tax returns
- Employment, investment, and pension income
- Director/shareholder returns
- High-income individuals
- Company accounts and Corporation Tax returns
- Routine HMRC compliance work associated with those submissions
- Loading and maintaining clients within the relevant tax software
- Preparing returns and calculations
- Identifying missing information or points requiring clarification
- Obtaining internal technical guidance where required
- Preparing returns for client approval and subsequent submission
The volume will initially be modest and will grow as BC Tax develops.
The Arrangement
The arrangement is expected to be freelance/contract, with work undertaken as required and invoiced to us based on time spent.
You do not need to win or manage clients. This is important. Client relationship management is not a requirement of this role.
You will not be expected to:
- Find clients
- Network or market the business
- Conduct discovery meetings
- Sell additional services
- Provide sophisticated strategic tax planning
- Develop a personal client book

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
Start with a chat, not a search bar
Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
Graduate Consultant — 2026 Scheme
Why you're a good match
StrongYour economics background and your summer at a regional bank line up with what PwC looks for on the consulting scheme. Applications close in four weeks.
See breakdownIt searches the market for you
Every day your agent scans the market matching roles against what actually matters to you, not just keywords on a CV.
Why you're a good match
You’ve got the grades and the economics background, and your bank internship is exactly the experience this scheme looks for. Apply soon — deadlines close within the month.
Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
If you enjoy speaking with clients and occasionally want to do so, that's absolutely fine. But you do not have to be client-facing to succeed in this role.
We want to make the compliance work easy to pick up. Barnaby Cecil comes from a regulated financial-planning environment, so we are used to structured client files and clear audit trails.
Our intention is that, before a case reaches you:
- The client will have completed a structured tax fact find
- AML and onboarding will have been completed
- The scope of work and fee will have been agreed
- Relevant documents will have been collected and organized
- The client's circumstances and any known issues will be summarized
- Where appropriate, a tax advisory colleague will have provided a written view or memo on more complex matters
You should therefore receive a well-prepared file rather than being expected to chase a client for every missing document yourself.
Technical Support
You will also not be left alone with difficult technical judgments. BC Tax will work with experienced senior tax advisers who can provide guidance on cases that move beyond straightforward compliance.
If something doesn't look right, the expectation is:
- Flag it
- Discuss it
- Get the technical view
- Then complete the return correctly
We want a collaborative model where the compliance specialist can concentrate on doing excellent compliance work while having access to senior technical expertise when needed.
About You
We are particularly interested in someone who:

Your very own career expert that helps elevate your application to the next level.
- Has substantial hands-on UK tax compliance experience
- Is comfortable preparing both personal and corporate returns
- Understands the mechanics of Self Assessment and Corporation Tax submissions
- Is highly accurate and methodical
- Enjoys completing work and meeting deadlines
- Is comfortable working independently
- Communicates clearly when information is missing or something requires technical review
- Is comfortable working with modern tax software and digital client files
- Takes pride in producing clean, accurate work
ATT, CTA, ACA, ACCA, or equivalent experience would all be relevant, but practical compliance experience matters more to us than job title.
What We Are Building
BC Tax is being established as a specialist tax practice alongside Barnaby Cecil Financial Planning. Initially, many clients will be high-earning professionals, particularly senior medical consultants and existing Barnaby Cecil clients.
Our model is deliberately different from a traditional accountancy firm. We intend to separate:
- Tax compliance — accurate, efficient preparation and submission
- from
- Tax advisory — more complex strategic work undertaken by experienced specialist tax advisers.
We want people doing the work they are genuinely excellent at and enjoy doing. This role could therefore suit an experienced tax professional who has moved into freelance work, wants flexible additional work, or simply prefers producing excellent tax compliance to spending their week in client meetings.
If that sounds like you, we'd be very interested to hear from you. Please apply through LinkedIn or contact Tom Skinner directly for a confidential conversation.
