Freight Co-ordinator
Location: Stromness, Orkney, KW16 3BH Salary: £32,755 plus excellent benefits Schedule: Full-time, 35 hours per week – flexibility required to support 24/7 operations and 1 in 3 weekend shifts

As a Freight Co-ordinator in our Transport team, you’ll be central to delivering a safe, efficient, and high-quality freight service across the NorthLink Ferries contract. You’ll ensure the smooth movement of goods between the Scottish mainland and the Northern Isles, supporting communities reliant on this essential service.
This is a dynamic, operationally critical role. Your coordination skills, leadership, and ability to adapt to demand will make a direct impact. You’ll collaborate closely with teams, customers, and partners to uphold the highest safety and efficiency standards.
About the Role
The ideal candidate will:
- Operate a fast-paced environment with high-skill coordination and problem-solving
- Drive operational success through strong teamwork and planning
- Maintain compliance with safety and quality standards, including ISO-aligned processes.
What You’ll Do
You’ll be responsible for:
- Managing day-to-day freight operations across multiple ports and locations.
- Coordinating freight schedules, adapting to demand, operational needs, and weather disruptions.
- Leading and supporting frontline teams and subcontractors for maximum performance.
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, stakeholders, and operational partners.
- Monitoring and prioritising freight bookings for timely and efficient resource allocation.
- Analysing operational performance and market trends to minimise downtime and boost productivity.
- Ensuring compliance with safety, quality, and contractual standards.
- Supporting business continuity, risk management, and emergency responses.
- Overseeing equipment, facilities, and supplier performance across operational sites.

Who You Are
The perfect candidate will have:
- Experience in transport, logistics, or operational coordination (essential if from another sector; a customer service background strongly preferred).
- Exceptional organisational and multitasking skills with the ability to handle competing priorities.
- Outstanding communication skills, able to engage with stakeholders at all levels.
- A proactive, resilient mindset with strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools, with experience in Excel and preferably Power BI.
- Flexibility and adaptability to thrive in a fast-paced, 24/7 operational environment.
