Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you'll do at work

• Learn how to coordinate international shipments by air, sea, road and rail, supporting the team with booking freight, tracking shipments and ensuring customers are kept informed
• Develop an understanding of customs processes, shipping documentation, quotations and freight forwarding systems while working alongside experienced colleagues
• Build strong relationships with customers, suppliers and overseas agents, providing excellent customer service and helping to deliver smooth, efficient logistics solutions
• Receive structured on-the-job training and mentoring, developing the knowledge and skills needed to progress into a Multi-Modal Account Manager role
• Work as part of a supportive operations team, learning company procedures, contributing ideas for improvement and gaining experience across all areas of the freight forwarding process

This is an office-based role based in Altrincham, where you'll work closely with our experienced operations team.

You'll receive full training, mentoring and support throughout your apprenticeship, with genuine opportunities for career progression on successful completion.

The role involves regular use of computers, email and telephone communication, so you'll need to be comfortable working in a fast-paced office environment.

International logistics is a dynamic industry, so no two days are the same. You'll need to be organised, adaptable and able to prioritise tasks to meet customer deadlines.

As you develop, you may have the opportunity to visit customers, attend industry events and gain exposure to all areas of the freight forwarding business.

What you'll learn

Course contents

• Select freight forwarding services based on customer requirements, taking into account country specific factors, delivery times and modes.
• Use generic or bespoke ICT systems in order to enter and monitor data on importing or exporting goods.
• Book, plan and monitor international shipments, using manual or ICT systems, in accordance with the rules and regulations that apply to that area of the world and to the goods consigned.
• Prepare a customs declaration to a national standard, or give custom clearance instructions to a third party.
• Use data systems to submit the information required by customs authorities as part of the management of the international movement of goods.
• Produce freight costings and invoices in line with Incoterms, customer profile or sales contract.
• Identify and source data from customers, systems or colleagues.
• Identify and resolve problems in line with responsibilities.
• Create and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external customers.
• Adapt communication based on the situation and the audience.
• Identify problems outside of limits of responsibility and escalate within company policy.
• Communicate in writing, preparing communications on technical matters.
• Communicate with others verbally, including internal and external customers.
