Join our friendly team at The Old Chequers Inn as a Front of House Hospitality Apprentice. You’ll gain hands-on experience helping to run the bar, manage stock and orders, open and close the pub, maintain high standards and deliver great food and drink service to our customers.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

About the Role

The Old Chequers Inn is a beautiful, historic country pub in Croft, near Skegness, offering quality food, great drinks and a warm, friendly atmosphere. As a Front of House Hospitality Apprentice, you will become an important member of the team, learning how to help run the front of house operation and gaining valuable experience across the bar, restaurant and wider pub.

You will work alongside experienced team members to develop your hospitality skills and learn how a busy country pub operates. As your confidence and experience grow, you will take on increasing responsibility for supporting the smooth running of front of house.

Your Duties Will Include:

  • Greeting guests, taking orders and serving food and drink with a friendly, professional approach.
  • Learning how to work behind the bar, including pouring drinks and developing knowledge of cask ales.
  • Bar duties involving alcohol will be for team members aged 18 or over.
  • Supporting the day-to-day management of the bar and front of house operation.
  • Learning about stock control, including checking stock levels, rotating stock, and putting deliveries away.
  • Becoming familiar with the menu, daily specials and ingredients so you can confidently answer guest queries and make recommendations.
  • Upselling menu items, drinks and specials where appropriate to enhance the customer experience.
  • Preparing front of house areas ready for service and helping ensure everything is clean, organised and fully stocked.
  • Helping to open and close the pub, and prepare the bar and restaurant for the day's service.
  • Carrying out bar clean-downs and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and presentation throughout the pub.
  • Running food services and working closely with the kitchen to ensure food reaches guests promptly and to a high standard.
  • Keeping service areas clean, tidy and well-stocked throughout each shift.
  • Following all food safety, hygiene and allergen procedures during preparation and service.
  • Handling customer payments accurately and in line with company procedures.
  • Taking part in training and development activities as part of the apprenticeship, building your knowledge, confidence and practical skills.
  • Developing the skills required to take on greater responsibility within front of house as your experience grows.
  • Maintaining high standards of personal appearance, punctuality, reliability and professional conduct.
  • Helping to create the welcoming and friendly atmosphere that The Old Chequers Inn is known for.
  • Carrying out any other associated duties reasonably required to support the successful operation of the pub.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
