About the club
The Royal Dart Yacht Club has been part of life on the River Dart since 1866. We sit right on the water at Kingswear, looking across to Bayards Cove and out towards Dartmouth Castle and the sea. Sailing is at the centre of what we do, but the bar, clubhouse and terrace are where most of our members and their guests spend their time, and they matter to us just as much as the racing.
Our year has a clear rhythm to it. Quieter weekday winter evenings, vibrant weekends, private functions through the year, and then the sailing season, summer sundowner nights, and Regatta week, when the club is full and the pace really picks up. We're after someone who enjoys all aspects of our club life.
The role
We're looking for a Bar Manager to take charge of the bar and front of house. You'll run the day-to-day operation, look after the commercial side of the bar, lead the team and make sure our members and their guests are well looked after. It's a hands-on job. When we're busy, you'll be behind the bar and out on the floor with everyone else. The rest of the time you'll be planning, ordering and keeping an eye on the numbers.
This is an important appointment for us, and we'd like to fill it as soon as possible.
What the job involves
Reporting to the F&B Manager and Hospitality Secretary:
Running the bar
- Looking after the bar and cellar day to day, keeping standards high and everything clean and well kept.
- Ordering stock, taking deliveries, rotating stock and cleaning lines.
- Carrying out regular stocktakes, keeping accurate records and keeping wastage down.
- Managing suppliers and agreeing terms that work for the club.

Pricing and the numbers
- Setting prices and managing margins to keep the bar profitable while still delivering fair value to members.
- Keeping an eye on sales, gross profit and wastage, and using what you see to adjust the range and any offers.
- Choosing a drinks range that works for everyday club life and for bigger events too, including local ales and a good selection of wines.
- Helping plan for functions so the bar is stocked, staffed and priced properly.
Members and front of house
- Being a familiar, friendly face and getting to know the members.
- Setting the standard for service across the bar and the social areas.
- Listening to feedback and putting things right when they come up.
- Working with the rest of the team so events and functions run well.
Leading the team
- Recruiting, training and rostering the bar and front-of-house team, including seasonal staff over the summer.
- Setting the tone on shift and keeping the team motivated.
- Matching staffing levels to how busy we expect to be.
Keeping things right
- Meeting licensing law, serving alcohol responsibly, and staying on top of health, safety and food hygiene.

- Someone who has managed a bar or worked front-of-house before, or done something similar.
- A good head for the commercial side, including stock control, margins and pricing.
- Someone who likes people and takes real pride in looking after members and guests.
- A calm, capable leader who can bring a team with them when things get busy.
- Happy with the evenings, weekends and seasonal peaks that come with a club like ours.
- A Personal Licence holder, or willing to get one, with a good understanding of licensing and food hygiene.
- Experience in a members' club, yacht club or events venue would be an advantage, though it isn't essential.
