Role Overview
Here you’ll sit between the oil desk and the data infrastructure, and you make both sides better.
This is a front office data role at a commodity trading firm where the pace is genuinely different. New ideas do not sit in approval queues for months. If you have a good idea, you are implementing it within weeks. You take real ownership here, and that matters.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities
Day to day you are working closely with the oil desk, supporting pricing and fundamentals data, facing off to traders directly and understanding what they need from the data. You are not a pure desk analyst and you are not a pure engineer. You live in the middle. You can talk to quants and developers, and you can talk to the desk. That combination is what makes this role work.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Experience fit
Your summer at the bank plus your econometrics coursework map directly to the day-one responsibilities on this scheme — client modelling, market briefings, and deal support.
Only hits
No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.
Technical Skills Required
On the technical side, you are comfortable in Python and SQL, and you are already using AI assisted coding tools or you are actively keen to. You do not need to be designing systems from the ground up, but you can read code, make small changes, and push things forward without waiting for someone else to do it for you. You know your way around an IDE.
Projects
One of the projects you will be involved in is a re-engineering of the pricing infrastructure, so there is real substance to get into from the start.

Ideal Candidate
Ideally, you’ll have solid knowledge of oil market data and fundamental data. You understand what the numbers mean, not just how to move them around.
This would suit someone who has come from a data or technology background in commodities and built genuine market knowledge, or someone who started on the analytical side and has since developed real technical ability.
