Frontend Engineer (AI) | Contract | Initial 3 Months
We’re looking for a UX Design Engineer with strong AI experience to join an exciting new AI experimentation team within a major UK organisation.
This is a rare opportunity for someone who sits comfortably between UX design and front-end engineering — someone who can take an AI concept from idea, through interaction design, into working coded prototypes.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be helping shape a new AI Community of Practice, working alongside designers, engineers, architects, and data scientists.
Your work will include:
- Designing experiences for AI-powered products — chat, generative tools, recommendations, and agentic workflows
- Building high-fidelity prototypes in React and testing concepts with real users
- Using modern AI tooling such as Claude Code, Cursor, Figma, and other AI-assisted development tools
- Creating reusable AI interaction patterns — prompt inputs, chat interfaces, data visualisation, and agent workflows
- Exploring how AI can improve the way design teams work and prototype
- Working closely with technical teams to understand and communicate technical trade-offs
- Helping establish practical patterns and approaches for designing AI experiences at scale

What we're looking for

This isn't a traditional UX role and it isn't a traditional front-end role. We're looking for someone who genuinely designs and codes.
You should have:
- A portfolio containing live or working coded prototypes — not just static Figma work
- Strong JavaScript, HTML, modern CSS, and React skills
- Advanced Figma experience, including variables, auto-layout, prototyping, design systems, and tokens
- Practical experience building AI-powered experiences, agents, or AI workflows
- Experience with MCP, tool calling, RAG, or agent orchestration — MCP experience is particularly interesting
- An understanding of AI evaluation, including where AI outputs can fail and how those risks can be designed for
- The ability to collaborate confidently with engineers, architects, and data scientists
- The ability to explain technical concepts and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders
