About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Front-End Developer to join our dynamic team at DWP Digital. In this pivotal role, you will lead the development and evolution of our Design System, a strategic platform that enables teams across government to deliver consistent, accessible, and user-centered digital services efficiently. You will be responsible for shaping the technical direction of reusable front-end components, ensuring they meet high standards of quality, accessibility, and performance. As a technical leader, you will provide guidance, share expertise, and promote best practices across multidisciplinary teams. Your work will directly impact the delivery of digital services used by millions, helping to create seamless experiences across multiple devices and platforms. This position offers an exciting opportunity to influence government-wide standards and contribute to innovative digital solutions that make a real difference in people's lives.
Qualifications
- Expert knowledge and significant experience in modern front-end technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, and open-source frameworks.
- Proven experience designing and delivering accessible, user-centered interfaces that meet WCAG 2.2 standards, with a focus on creating well-tested, robust, and maintainable code.
- Strong experience in integrating front-end applications with back-end services and other technical systems, utilizing appropriate technologies to solve complex challenges.
- Demonstrable leadership skills in setting technical direction, driving quality, consistency, and adherence to standards across development teams.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary agile teams, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality digital products.
- A passion for coaching, mentoring, and fostering an inclusive learning environment that supports continuous capability growth and improvement.

Responsibilities
- Lead the development of reusable front-end patterns, components, and code libraries, shaping the technical direction of the Design System and contributing to cross-government standards.
- Build, test, release, maintain, and support front-end products using modern tooling, test-driven development, and iterative delivery practices to ensure high-quality outcomes.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of front-end solutions with back-end services, delivering consistent user experiences across devices and browsers.
- Champion accessibility, user experience, and design consistency, ensuring all products and components meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards and align with established design principles.
- Mentor colleagues, engage with engineering and user-centered design communities, and assist teams in overcoming technical challenges.
- Identify and manage technical and business constraints, set priorities effectively, and contribute to the continuous improvement of government frameworks, standards, and ways of working.

- Joining DWP Digital offers a competitive salary package ranging from £57,946 to £80,664, with the opportunity for a Digital Allowance of up to £12,459 for exceptional candidates.

- The role is based in one of our vibrant digital hubs located in Blackpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, or Sheffield, with a hybrid working model combining remote and face-to-face collaboration.
