Fuel Point Assistant (Progressing to Service Assistant)
Location: Tyne Yard
Contract: Permanent
Salary: £24,479 per annum, rising incrementally throughout training to £25,927.65 per annum upon successful completion of the development programme.

Arriva TrainCare is looking for a Fuel Point Assistant to join our team at Tyne Yard. This is more than just a job, it's a structured development opportunity that offers a clear pathway to becoming a fully qualified Service Assistant.
You'll receive comprehensive training, gain valuable rail industry experience, and benefit from incremental salary increases as you progress through the programme.
Upon successful completion, your role will transition to Service Assistant with a salary of £25,927.65 per annum.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Fuel Point Assistant, you'll play a key role in ensuring trains are serviced and ready for operation by:
- Operating the fuel point and supporting depot servicing activities.
- Fuelling traction units and replenishing onboard systems.
- Filling and emptying toilet and water systems.
- Replenishing coolants, oils, sanding systems and screenwash.
- Driving rail vehicles within depot operating limits following training and certification.
- Completing environmental and safety checks.
- Supporting maintenance and train presentation teams.
- Completing documentation accurately and efficiently.
- Maintaining high standards of housekeeping across the depot.
- Working safely and complying with all company policies and procedures.

Your Development Journey
This role includes a structured training programme covering:
- Corporate and depot induction
- Health and safety training
- Personal Track Safety (PTS)
- First Aid
- Depot protection competencies
- Fork Lift Truck (FLT) training
- Driver assessments
- Rail operational competencies
As you complete key milestones, your salary will increase in line with the progression framework.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- NVQ Level 2, BTEC, City & Guilds or equivalent Engineering qualification.
- Good standard of education.
- Basic IT skills.
- Strong awareness of health and safety.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.

Desirable
- Experience in rail, engineering, maintenance or operational environments.
- Knowledge of depot operations.
- Understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
- Experience working within safety-critical environments.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement practices.
