Full-Stack Developer
We are looking for an experienced Full-Stack Developer to join our technology team and work across a range of client-facing and internal digital products.
The role will involve developing new solutions, maintaining and improving existing applications, integrating systems and services, and helping us make sound technical decisions across our portfolio.
You will work on a mixture of established platforms and new development, so we are looking for someone who is equally comfortable building from scratch and taking ownership of existing codebases developed by others.
This is a hands-on development role with a strong emphasis on maintainability, security, reliability and pragmatic problem-solving.
Salary
£40k – £50k
Key skills
- Design, develop and maintain web applications and digital platforms
- Work across both frontend and backend development
- Take ownership of existing applications and understand unfamiliar codebases
- Develop new features and improve existing functionality
- Build and maintain APIs and third-party integrations
- Work with relational databases, including schema design, querying and optimisation
- Diagnose and resolve technical issues across application, database and hosting layers
- Review and improve existing code for maintainability, performance and security
- Apply secure development practices across authentication, permissions, data handling and application access
- Contribute to technical architecture and solution design
- Support deployment, release and rollback processes
- Maintain appropriate technical documentation
- Work with internal stakeholders and clients

Core skillset
We are looking for strong commercial experience in a combination of the following:
- PHP, including experience developing and maintaining bespoke applications
- JavaScript / TypeScript
- React and Next.js
- Node.js
- MySQL or similar relational databases
- REST APIs and third-party integrations
- Git and source-control workflows
- HTML and CSS
- Linux-based web environments
- Web application debugging and troubleshooting
- Secure software development
- Testing and release management
Particularly valuable experience
Experience in the following areas would be especially useful:
- Taking over applications developed by another developer or supplier
- Maintaining bespoke or legacy systems
- Working across multiple applications and technology stacks
- Modernising existing applications without unnecessary rewrites
- Application architecture and technical design
- Performance optimisation
- Authentication and user-management systems
- CI/CD pipelines
- Automated testing
- Cloud or managed hosting environments
- Monitoring and logging
- Security reviews and remediation
- Learning platforms, SaaS products or data-driven applications

You will ideally be someone who:
- Is comfortable taking responsibility for technically complex systems
- Can quickly understand unfamiliar applications and codebases
- Takes a pragmatic approach to software development
- Balances good engineering practice with commercial priorities
- Is comfortable working independently as well as collaboratively
- Can explain technical concepts to non-technical colleagues and clients
- Thinks carefully about security, maintainability and long-term support
- Is confident recommending alternative approaches when there is a better technical solution
- Enjoys working across different projects rather than focusing on a single product or technology
What success looks like
You will become a trusted technical contributor across our development work, able to take projects from requirement through to implementation and ongoing support.
You will help us build new solutions while also strengthening the reliability, security and maintainability of our existing applications. Over time, you will develop a broad understanding of our technology landscape and help shape how we approach software development across the business.
