Bolland & Co is a remote-first, family-led technology and innovation consultancy with roots in Manchester. We work with ambitious organisations to design, build, and improve digital platforms, applications, and connected technology. We’re looking for an experienced Full-Stack Developer to join our team and help us deliver high-quality digital products across a varied portfolio of clients.
Job purpose
You’ll work across modern web, mobile, and backend applications, building new products from the ground up as well as improving and extending established platforms.
This is a hands-on development role with genuine ownership. You’ll be expected to understand the problem we’re solving, contribute to technical decisions, and take features from specification through development, testing, and deployment.
Projects vary considerably. One week you could be working within a mature Django platform, the next building a new React application or integrating several third-party systems into a client’s existing technology stack.
You’ll work alongside our technical, product, design, and delivery teams, but we’re looking for someone who is comfortable taking responsibility for their own work and making sensible technical decisions without needing constant direction.
Key responsibilities/accountabilities
- Developing high-quality frontend, backend, and API-driven applications.
- Building reusable, maintainable components and services.
- Working across both greenfield projects and established production codebases.
- Translating specs, designs, and client requirements into robust technical solutions.
- Integrating third-party platforms, APIs, webhooks, and services.
- Contributing to technical architecture and implementation decisions.
- Setting up new projects, repositories, tooling, and development conventions.
- Writing automated tests and maintaining clear technical documentation.
- Reviewing code and contributing constructively to engineering discussions.
- Troubleshooting technical issues across application, infrastructure, and integration layers.
- Supporting deployment, release, and ongoing maintenance of client platforms.
- Working closely with delivery teams to ensure what we build is technically sound.
- Using AI-assisted development tools intelligently to improve development velocity.

AI-assisted development
AI is increasingly part of how we work. We need developers who are comfortable using tools such as Claude Code and other AI-assisted development environments as part of their everyday workflow.
That does not mean blindly accepting generated code. We’re looking for someone who can use AI to move faster while retaining the engineering judgment to challenge output, identify incorrect assumptions, maintain coding standards, and understand the code being shipped.
Experience developing or improving AI-assisted engineering workflows across a team would be particularly valuable.
Knowledge and experience
We’re looking for a strong, experienced developer rather than somebody who happens to have worked with every technology in our stack.
You should have:
- Strong professional experience building modern web applications across both front-end and backend technologies.
- Solid experience with React and modern JavaScript or TypeScript.
- Strong backend development experience, ideally with Python and Django or a comparable modern web framework.
- Experience integrating external APIs and third-party services.
- Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL.
- Practical experience with automated testing and a belief that testing forms part of delivering the feature, rather than being an afterthought.
- Experience deploying and maintaining production applications.
- The ability to understand an unfamiliar codebase and work within its existing conventions.
- The confidence to take a feature from specification through to deployment independently.
Just as importantly, we’re looking for somebody pragmatic. You should know when to challenge an approach, when to follow an established convention, and when the simplest solution is the right one.
Key skills
- Good understanding of API design, databases, authentication, permissions, and application architecture.
- Strong understanding of Git-based development workflows.
- Good awareness of application security, including authorisation, data isolation, secret handling, and potential data leakage.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical colleagues.
