Simmons & Simmons - Senior Software Engineer
Inside IR35
6-months rolling contract
Hybrid
The Role
We need an experienced full-stack engineer to join a small team and deliver across the stack: React and TypeScript front end; back-end APIs (in Python and FastAPI, or Node.js and TypeScript); a relational or document data layer; and the CI/CD pipeline that ships it to production.
This is a delivery-focused contract, so we're looking for someone senior enough to take a feature or workstream and run with it from day one — scoping, building, testing and deploying with minimal supervision. You'll work alongside the team through sprints, stand-ups, planning and reviews, with the emphasis on craft, breadth and getting things shipped.
What you'll do
- Design and build back-end microservices and APIs (REST) in Python and FastAPI, or Node.js and TypeScript.
- Model and query data across relational SQL and/or NoSQL stores, and own migrations and schema changes.
- Build responsive, accessible front ends with React and TypeScript.
- Write automated tests at the right levels (unit, integration, end-to-end) to keep delivery safe and fast.
- Ship through CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions), containerised builds, and deployment to Azure.
- Build security in from the start, following secure-by-default practices across the stack.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Nice to have
- AI-powered features: LLM integration, RAG, embeddings and vector stores, prompt design.
- Microsoft 365 experience (e.g. Graph API, Teams, SharePoint or Power Platform).
- Infrastructure as Code (Bicep, Terraform) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).
- Secure SDLC practices: threat modelling, dependency scanning, secrets management.
What makes a strong contractor
- Gets productive quickly in an unfamiliar codebase and delivers with minimal onboarding.
- Owns a problem end-to-end across the stack, not just a single layer.
- Communicates clearly with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ships reliably and leaves the codebase better documented and easier to maintain than they found it.
