Senior Full Stack Engineer / Tech Lead – Node.js, React & AWS

Location: Warwick, UK

Employment Type: Contract (3 to 5 months, Possibility of extension)

Working Model: Hybrid (3 days/week Onsite)

What You'll Do

  • Assess the existing Node.js, React, React Native and AWS-based application and identify areas for improvement.
  • Analyse existing architecture, code quality, technical debt, scalability and production stability.
  • Define and implement recommendations to stabilise, modularise and future-proof the codebase.
  • Improve application architecture to support greater scalability, flexibility and maintainability.
  • Take ownership of technical solutions from assessment and design through to implementation.
  • Provide technical stewardship and leadership for new product development.
  • Work closely with product and engineering stakeholders to translate requirements into robust technical solutions.
  • Improve development practices around code quality, testing, releases and production support.
  • Investigate and resolve complex production issues and contribute to reducing recurring incidents.
  • Establish appropriate engineering standards, patterns and best practices across the codebase.
  • Collaborate closely with other engineers and stakeholders and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Help create a more modular and resilient platform that can evolve as product requirements grow.

Required Skills & Experience

Backend

  • Strong commercial experience with Node.js.
  • Strong understanding of backend architecture, APIs and scalable application design.
  • Experience building and maintaining production-grade applications.
  • Strong understanding of REST APIs, integrations and asynchronous processing.

Frontend

  • Strong experience with React.js and TypeScript.
  • Experience developing modern, scalable frontend applications.
  • Experience with React Native is highly desirable.

AWS / Cloud

  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS.
  • Experience designing and supporting applications running on cloud infrastructure.
  • Good understanding of serverless and managed AWS services.
  • Experience with services such as Lambda, SQS, Cognito, S3, RDS or similar is highly desirable.

Architecture & Engineering

  • Strong experience with system design and software architecture.
  • Proven ability to work with and improve existing/legacy codebases.
  • Experience with modularisation, refactoring and reducing technical debt.
  • Strong understanding of scalability, reliability and maintainability.
  • Experience identifying root causes of production issues rather than relying solely on short-term fixes.
  • Good understanding of CI/CD, automated testing and release quality.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code / Terraform is desirable.
  • Strong understanding of multi-tenant applications is a plus.

We are looking for someone who is more than an individual contributor who simply completes tickets.

You should be comfortable taking ownership of a technical area, challenging existing approaches where appropriate, making architectural decisions, and then rolling up your sleeves and implementing them.

The ideal person will be:

  • Hands-on and technically strong.
  • Comfortable operating at Senior Engineer / Tech Lead level.
  • Strong in both frontend and backend development.
  • Comfortable working across application code, architecture and AWS.
  • Experienced in stabilising and modernising existing systems.
  • Strong at troubleshooting complex production issues.
  • Able to make pragmatic technical decisions and explain them clearly.
  • Comfortable working with autonomy and taking ownership.
  • A strong communicator who can collaborate effectively with product and engineering stakeholders.
  • Able to work at pace without compromising engineering quality.
