About Sovvlyn
Sovvlyn is UK-based start-up building a sovereign, privacy-first encrypted communications and workspace platform. We are engineering a product where user data stays under the user’s control by design, not by policy. We’re a small, senior founding team building something genuinely differentiated, and we’re looking for a full-stack engineering intern to grow with us.
The Role
As a Full-Stack Engineering Intern, you’ll join our engineering team as a mentored member and contribute across the Sovvlyn stack as part of our Phase 1 launch. The role is full-stack, but the initial emphasis is on frontend: you’ll begin by building real, production-bound UI for the Sovvlyn web application (PWA) under the direct guidance of our Frontend Engineer Co-Founder. As you progress, you’ll take on an increasing share of backend development under Co-Founder mentorship, broadening into full-stack ownership over the course of the internship.
This is a hands-on, build-focused role. You’ll be shipping components and services, writing tests, and participating in code review and sprint ceremonies alongside experienced engineers.

- Implement React 18 / TypeScript 5 (strict mode) user-interface components, screens, and application states within an established Vite + Tailwind CSS codebase.
- Build core product surfaces — authentication flows, messaging UI, capsule creation, workspace screens, and more — to specification, following patterns set by your mentor.
- Apply an established design-token system for consistent, accessible, responsive UI (WCAG 2.1 AA).
Backend (growing over the internship)
- Take on (Rust) backend development tasks under separate mentorship, implementing services, APIs, and data-layer logic within the architecture and patterns your mentor establishes.
- Grow from assigned, reviewed backend contributions toward increasing full-stack ownership as your experience develops.
Across the stack
- Write and maintain automated tests (unit, integration, and end-to-end) to professional quality standards.
- Participate in code review, agile sprint ceremonies, and structured engineering mentorship throughout the internship.
What We’re Looking For
- Working knowledge of React and TypeScript, with a genuine interest in writing clean, well-tested code — this is where you’ll start.
- Familiarity with modern frontend tooling (e.g. Vite, Tailwind CSS) or a demonstrated ability to pick it up quickly.
- Some exposure to backend development (any language or framework) and an eagerness to grow into full-stack work.
- A portfolio, GitHub, or project work showing what you’ve built — personal projects, coursework, or prior internships all count.
- Strong communication, receptiveness to code-review feedback, and the discipline to deliver assigned work to a deadline.
- Comfort working independently on your own schedule while staying closely aligned with your mentors. No minimum-hours threshold applies — we measure contribution by delivery.

You don’t need prior startup experience. This role is designed for a junior engineer or student ready to learn fast in a real production environment and grow into full-stack ownership.
What You’ll Gain

Progression
This is an equity-track internship. Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month internship — subject to your responsibilities and deliverables being met — you may be eligible for conversion to a Co-Founder engineering role. We invest in our interns and want to grow long-term contributors.
