About the Role

We’re seeking ambitious Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Paramedics, or Pharmacists to join Serco as Functional Assessors. This role will allow you to utilise your clinical expertise in a unique way while helping millions of people with health conditions and disabilities.
What is a Functional Assessor?
A Functional Assessor is a seasoned clinical professional who conducts unbiased, comprehensive health assessments for the Health Assessment Advisory Service (HAAS). HAAS carries out health assessments for the DWP across the UK.
What is HAAS?
HAAS is a new service merging existing disability and health condition assessment services under a single regional provider across the UK. This simplifies access for claimants who need assessments to support their benefit claims.
Our team delivers assessments for:
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants
- Work Capability Assessments (WCAs) for people claiming Universal Credit (UC) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Responsibilities
As a Functional Assessor, you’ll engage with claimants through phone, in-person, or video consultations in a non-clinical environment to carry out functional health assessments. Your goal is to help the DWP understand how a claimant’s disability or health condition affects their daily life.
Key duties include:
- Using active listening and compassion for fair, empathetic assessments.
- Producing accurate, detailed reports to guide DWP’s decision-making.
- Consulting with treating healthcare professionals and caregivers.
- Ensuring final reports meet high standards, reflecting all relevant information.

- >1 year of post-registration experience as a Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Paramedic, or Pharmacist.
- A full registration with a relevant UK regulatory body (NMC, HCPC, or another) with no restrictions, a valid PIN, and a commitment to continue in practice.
- Strong observational and communication skills for rapport-building with diverse claimants.
- Proficient IT skills to compile clear reports efficiently—speed and accuracy are critical.

Attractive Salaries & Development Opportunities
- A starting salary range from £37,500 - £45,500 based on location and experience.
- £1000 uplift after 6 months, ascending to £1000 an additional £1000 at 12 months.
- Hybrid or remote options: Typically 2+ days in-person per week at one of our consultation centres.
- Potential for up to 10% quality and performance bonus once approved as an Assessor.
