Functional Skills Tutor- HMP Nottingham
Permanent
Salary: From £30,000 per annum
Are you a passionate Functional Skills tutor looking for a role where your teaching genuinely makes a difference?
About the Role
We are seeking an inspiring Functional Skills Tutor to join an education provider in the justice sector, delivering meaningful learning within a prison education setting. This is a unique opportunity to support learners on their rehabilitation journey, helping them build the skills, confidence and qualifications needed to progress into employment and shape brighter futures.
You'll deliver engaging and inclusive lessons to learners with a wide range of educational backgrounds, learning needs and abilities. Many of your learners will have had difficult experiences of education, so patience, empathy and a genuine belief in each individual's potential will matter as much as your subject knowledge.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Delivering functional skills English and/or maths qualifications to groups of learners.
- Conducting initial assessments and diagnostics to identify learners' starting points and needs.
- Planning and adapting lessons to meet a diverse range of abilities and learning styles.
- Monitoring learner progress and maintaining accurate records of achievement.
- Creating a positive, respectful and safe learning environment within a secure setting.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
