We have several hybrid (2 days at home per week) roles available for Functional Specialists across Northern Ireland, based at one of our clinics in: Belfast, Foyle, Ballymena, Omagh, Enniskillen, Coleraine, Portadown, Newry or Armagh.
If you’re a registered nurse, paramedic, occupational therapist, or physiotherapist ready to step away from shift work and hands-on care, this could be your perfect next move.

About the Role (Functional Specialist)
Here, you’ll use your clinical expertise and analytical skills in a structured yet flexible way:
- Meet with benefits claimants (in-person, via video link, or by phone)
- Write in-depth, evidence-based reports
- Make clinical recommendations
- Enjoy a fixed schedule (no weekends or night shifts)

Work-Life Balance & Flexibility
- Hybrid working (up to 3 days per week from home)
- Fixed hours: Monday to Friday 8am–5pm (with occasional 8pm finishes if needed)
- Part-time or full-time (minimum 3 days per week)
Salary & Development
- Starting salary: £39,500 (rising to £40,500 after DfC approval)
- 10% Salary Bonus Scheme (quality/performance-based)

Job Description
You’ll carry out structured health assessments to determine how an individual’s condition impacts their daily life or work ability. Your responsibilities include:
Key Tasks
- Conduct 2–5 assessments daily, in person, by video call, or over the phone
- Gather clinical evidence with empathy and accuracy
- Write detailed reports (3,000–4,000 words) justifying DfC’s benefit decisions
- Continuously update knowledge of conditions and work-related impacts
Requirements & Qualifications
About You
We’re looking for one of the following:
- NMC Registered Nurse (RGN, RMN, or RNLD) with:
- Valid PIN number
- No current practice restrictions
- Minimum 1 year post-registration experience
- OR a paramedic, occupational therapist, or physiotherapist registered with:
- HCPC / Professional Body (valid PIN, no restrictions)
- Minimum 1 year post-registration experience
- OR a GMC registered doctor (valid PIN, no restrictions)
You must also demonstrate: 🔹 Ability to produce clear, evidence-based reports 🔹 Fast-paced yet structured problem-solving skills 🔹 Excellent IT proficiency (Microsoft Office + system adaptability) 🔹 Strong communicative and observational skills (empathy + active listening) 🔹 Driving licence or transport access for clinic visits

About Capita HAAS
We deliver the Health Assessment Advisory Service (HAAS) on behalf of the Northern Ireland Department for Communities (DfC), supporting claims for:
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Universal Credit (UC)
Security & Compliance ⚠ All successful candidates will undergo Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard ( vap 7 checks), which includes:
- Enhanced criminal record check (spent and unspent convictions visible)
- This role is regulated activity relating to children/vulnerable adults under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006. You’ll be informed if interviews or assessments require adjustments.
