Company Description
Discover a fresh career path in healthcare as a functional specialist.
Working in healthcare but looking for a change? If you’re a nurse (RMN, RNLD, RGN), occupational therapist, physiotherapist, or paramedic, you could leverage your skills in a new way as a functional specialist.
At Capita Health Assessment Advisory Service (HAAS), we provide unbiased, comprehensive assessments for claimants of the Government’s disability allowance (Personal Independence Payment), conducted either by phone, video call, or in person—whether at our assessment centres or in the claimant’s home.
Job Description: Functional Specialist
We care for hearings which assist the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in making critical decisions about individuals’ health and care needs.
This role offers qualified nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, or paramedics the chance to:
- Strengthen their assessment skills without direct patient care.
- Apply professional expertise in a distinctive setting to provide clinical recommendations.
- Work in a supportive environment with accessible training and development opportunities.
With flexible hours, a competitive salary, and career growth, this could be the ideal role for professionals seeking a change.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting initial reviews, paper-based, face-to-face, video, or telephone assessments to evaluate how a claimant’s health condition or disability impacts their daily life.
- Observing and reporting independently on a claimant’s ability to perform activities.
- Interpreting clinical information and supporting evidence.
- Writing detailed, 3,000 to 4,000-word reports for each claimant (up to 3 per day).
- Ensuring reports contain sufficient detail, evidence, and justification to aid the DWP’s decision-making.
- Expanding your clinical knowledge, exploring unfamiliar conditions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
