Help a small charity supporting adults with learning disabilities grow its impact
We're looking for a volunteer to research funding opportunities, identify suitable grants and help us develop strong applications to fund activities, equipment and future projects.
What difference will you make?
As a small charity, external funding can make a significant difference to what Areterra is able to offer.
- Your support would help us identify opportunities that we may otherwise miss and allow us to submit more considered, well-researched funding applications.
- Successful grants could directly support new activities, equipment, improvements to our outdoor site, animal care facilities, transport and other projects that benefit the adults who attend Areterra.
- Just as importantly, your help would enable us to build a more organised and sustainable approach to fundraising, with clearer records of opportunities, deadlines, applications and outcomes.
- By taking some of the research and application preparation workload away from our small management team, you would also free up more time for us to focus on developing the service and supporting the people who attend.
- This is a role where the impact of your work can be very tangible—a successful application may result in a new piece of equipment, an improved activity space, additional opportunities for members or a project that would otherwise not have been possible.

We are looking for someone who is organised, reliable and comfortable working independently, with strong written communication and research skills.

Ideally, you will have some previous experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Grant fundraising
- Trusts and foundations
- Bid writing
- Charity fundraising
- Funding research
- Writing applications, proposals or reports
- Researching eligibility criteria and funding guidance
- Maintaining trackers, deadlines and application records
Previous experience within a charity, community organisation, disability service, health or social care setting would be particularly useful, but is not essential.
The most important qualities are the ability to research opportunities carefully, interpret funder requirements, write clearly and persuasively, and keep organised records of applications and deadlines.
You should be comfortable working remotely and taking ownership of agreed tasks, while also knowing when to ask for further information or clarification.
Attention to detail is important, particularly when reviewing funding criteria and ensuring applications answer the questions being asked.
We would especially welcome someone who enjoys turning information about an organisation’s work into a clear and compelling case for support.
You do not need to have all of the above experience. We are also happy to hear from someone who has strong research and writing skills and would like to develop practical experience in charity fundraising.

Areterra is a small registered charity providing meaningful day opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and additional support needs.
We are looking for a volunteer to help us strengthen our fundraising activity by researching suitable funding opportunities and supporting the preparation of grant applications.
Working with our Operations Director, you would help us build a more structured funding pipeline rather than relying on occasional opportunities as they arise.
Key tasks may include:
- Researching grant-making trusts, foundations and other funders
- Checking eligibility criteria
- Identifying suitable funding opportunities for current and future projects
- Maintaining a simple grants tracker
- Monitoring application deadlines
- Gathering supporting information
- Helping draft clear, compelling funding applications
You may also help us develop reusable information about Areterra’s work, outcomes and impact, which can be adapted for future applications, as well as support monitoring reports for successful grants where appropriate.
We are particularly interested in support with funding for areas such as activities, equipment, site improvements, animal care facilities, transport, staffing and projects that enhance the opportunities available to the adults who attend Areterra.
The role is flexible and can be carried out remotely. We are ideally looking for around 3–5 hours per week, although this may vary depending on funding deadlines.
