Funeral Director
Are you an experienced professional who combines compassion, calm judgement and attention to detail? Whether your background is in the funeral profession or another similarly sensitive, service-led environment, if you are ready to take genuine responsibility for families and funerals, this could be the right next step for you.
About Us
For over 90 years, Tom Owen and Son Ltd has been a trusted, independent, family-run funeral director, supporting bereaved families across the County of Conwy and beyond.
We believe in being human first and funeral directors second. Our approach is modern, personal and compassionate - creating bespoke funerals that celebrate life with dignity and care.
Our team are known for their warmth, professionalism and meticulous attention to detail. For us, it is the little things that matter most - because nothing is ever too much trouble.
About the Funeral Director Role
This is an additional role created to strengthen our existing Funeral Director team as the business continues to develop. We are a small, hands-on team, so people do not work within rigid job boundaries; everyone contributes to whatever is needed to give families the best possible service.
On any given day, that might mean arranging or conducting a funeral, dressing or preparing a coffin, setting up the chapel, preparing vehicles, assisting with a transfer, creating a visual tribute or helping a colleague with an urgent task. We are looking for someone who takes pride in being part of a team and is happy to turn their hand to what is needed.
You will take genuine responsibility for funerals from arrangement through to completion. We would welcome an established Funeral Director, but we are also keen to hear from someone with substantial funeral profession experience who is ready to step into full Funeral Director responsibility, or an exceptional candidate with very strong transferable experience from a similarly sensitive, service-led profession who can demonstrate the judgement, empathy and personal responsibility needed to develop into the role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Meet families and make funeral arrangements in a compassionate, confident and organised manner.
- Take ownership of allocated funerals from arrangement through to completion, keeping families informed and supported throughout.
- Conduct funerals and coordinate service timings, vehicles, bearers, venues, crematoria, cemeteries and other funeral-day logistics.
- Liaise professionally with ministers, celebrants, registrars, crematoria, cemeteries and other service partners.
- Ensure paperwork, legal requirements and operational tasks are completed accurately and within the required timescales.
- Help families personalise funerals in meaningful and creative ways, including music, visual tributes, service materials, photographs and other personal touches. You will be comfortable using digital systems and learning new technology, including creating and managing funeral slideshows and presentations where required.
- Support chapel visits and the care and presentation of the deceased to the standards expected by Tom Owen and Son.
- Assist with transfers of the deceased and the safe, dignified manual handling of coffins, stretchers and related equipment.
- Support post-funeral work, including ashes arrangements, ashes burials, memorials and headstone enquiries where appropriate.
- Use company systems consistently and work closely with colleagues to keep tasks, records and arrangements accurate and up to date.
- Participate in our shared out-of-hours rota and support colleagues during busy periods, absence and changing operational demands.
- Represent Tom Owen and Son positively within the local community, including attending and supporting coffee mornings, community events, networking activities and other outreach initiatives from time to time.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

This is a hands-on and physically active role. It involves regular lifting, carrying, manual handling and other physically demanding duties, so candidates must have the physical capability to undertake these safely. Appropriate training, equipment and team support are provided.
About You
You will be someone who combines compassion with confidence - calm, capable, dependable and always attentive to the needs of families and colleagues.
You will have:
- Substantial relevant experience within the funeral profession, or very strong transferable experience in a closely related or similarly sensitive, service-led profession.
- Experience supporting people through difficult or sensitive circumstances, with either direct funeral-arranging experience or clear evidence of the ability and readiness to develop into full Funeral Director responsibility.
- A full UK driving licence and confidence driving company vehicles is essential.
- A warm, approachable manner and a natural sense of empathy.
- Excellent organisational skills, sound judgement and strong attention to detail.
- The confidence to make day-to-day decisions, take ownership and identify problems early.
- A genuinely collaborative approach. You will be willing to help colleagues, share responsibility, learn from others and step in when something needs doing rather than waiting to be asked.
- An openness to feedback, training and continually improving the way we work. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Confident with modern technology and willing to learn new systems, software and ways of working. You do not need to know every system we use from day one, but you will need to be curious, adaptable and comfortable learning to organise, record and manage work.
- The flexibility required for funeral work, including participation in the shared out-of-hours rota.
- Comfortable representing the business publicly and building genuine relationships within the local community.
- Relevant professional qualifications and Welsh language skills would be advantageous, but experience, attitude, judgement and the right approach to families are particularly important to us.
