Job Summary

The Defence Nuclear Organisation (DNO) is responsible for the provision of the nuclear deterrent, encompassing our submarines and nuclear warheads, while also advising on UK nuclear planning and fostering international co-operation on nuclear matters. With a multidisciplinary team of over 700 professionals, the DNO brings together expertise in science, engineering, finance, policy, programme delivery, and more. We work in partnership with the Royal Navy, the Submarine Delivery Agency and the Atomic Weapons Establishment as the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE).

The Future Systems Programme Controls Manager post sits in DNO Warhead Group’s Integrated Stockpile Organisation (ISO), The Integrated Stockpile Organisation is responsible for the development, delivery and support of the current in-service Trident Mk4A Re-Entry System, Future Technologies and the replacement A21/Mk7 Re-Entry System. The ISO comprises ISM Develop and ISM Deliver, which together undertake the MOD intelligent customer role across the Concept, Assessment, Demonstration, Manufacture, In-Service and Disposal (CADMID) lifecycle.

You will be part of a dynamic and growing team, collaborating with colleagues based across multiple sites. The successful candidate will be the focal point for Project Control disciplines; Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), Risk Management, Assumptions Management and Dependencies Management etc, acting as the MOD intelligent customer with industry oversight, but also, represent the UK under the auspices of the Mutual Defence Agreement (MDA) & Polaris Sales Agreement (PSA).

This post is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job Description

  • Lead on the development, implementation, and management of all Future Systems Project Control disciplines; Integrated Master Schedule (IMS), Risk Management, Assumptions Management and Dependencies Management etc.
  • Manage the Future Systems Integrated Master Schedule (IMS) acting as the Intelligent Customer to integrate supplier sourced schedules whilst planning and overlaying MOD-derived activity (within Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project).
  • Use knowledge of the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (DNE), working with programme & technical experts to identify, mitigate and manage risks to reduce threats & maximise opportunities to the Future Systems programme.
  • Develop, configure, and manage the Future Systems Master Data Assumptions List (MDAL) ensuring assumptions underpin planning and technical development.
  • Ensure all programme-level dependencies are identified and managed accordingly.
  • Represent the UK under the auspices of the MDA & PSA creating collaborative Project Control process’.
  • Producing all Management Information (MI) to meet reporting requirements. Where possible, automate and digitalise data to create dashboard within PowerBI or similar software.

As the post holder will have access to very sensitive information, there are limitations on travelling to a small number of countries and we will undertake additional security checks as part of the recruitment process.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • APMQ or similar Project / Programme Management Qualifications.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years proven experience working in Project Management/Project Controls or similar roles on large-scale complex, engineering, or defence acquisition programmes.
  • Experience of using project delivery methods and controls, including plans, milestones, risks, issues, actions and reporting.
  • Ability to identify delivery risks and issues, take practical action and escalate appropriately.
  • Good stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to explain project information clearly and build effective working relationships, collaborating with UK and international partners
  • Build and manage robust performance baselines, ensuring meticulous tracking of programme schedule, cost, and scope deviations.
  • Lead the deployment of advanced scheduling practices using tools like Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project.
  • Management of programmes and projects though the CADMID cycle

Desirable Qualifications

  • Managing Successful Programmes (MSP)
  • Nuclear Weapons Foundation Course (NWFC).

Desirable Experience

  • Nuclear experience.
