About The Role
Balfour Beatty Living Places has an opportunity for a Ganger to join our Highways team in Buckinghamshire.
You will lead a small operational team delivering reactive, emergency, routine and winter maintenance activities across the Buckinghamshire Highways contract. This is a hands-on role where you will organise works on site, support your team and help ensure every activity is completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.
The role will involve a broad range of highways maintenance work, including minor civil engineering, temporary and permanent repairs, emergency attendance and making sites safe. You will also be responsible for the effective use of plant, equipment and resources while maintaining high standards of service for customers and members of the public.
What you'll be doing
As a Ganger, Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Leading and coordinating a small team of highways operatives on site
- Delivering reactive, routine, cyclical and emergency highways maintenance activities
- Ensuring the team follows safe systems of work and all relevant health, safety and company procedures
- Completing minor civil engineering works, including drainage, kerbing, concreting, slabbing and patch repairs
- Planning and monitoring daily activities against agreed work programmes
- Selecting the appropriate working methods to complete tasks safely and right first time
- Ensuring work meets the required safety, quality and operational standards
- Deploying plant, machinery, equipment and resources effectively
- Completing work instructions using a handheld device
- Identifying opportunities to improve working methods and service delivery
- Supporting out-of-hours emergency and winter maintenance services when required
- Reporting close calls, good practices and other site observations
- Communicating professionally with customers, subcontractors, colleagues and members of the public
- Representing Balfour Beatty positively while working within the local community

We are looking for someone with practical highways or civil engineering experience who can confidently lead a small operational team.

You Will Have
- A strong commitment to health and safety
- Experience in highways maintenance, construction or civil engineering
- The ability to organise work and provide clear direction to site operatives
- Good communication and customer service skills
- A reliable, flexible and adaptable approach
- The ability to work effectively in changing and sometimes demanding situations
- Pride in delivering accurate, high-quality work
- A positive attitude and professional approach
- The willingness to share knowledge and support the development of others
- The flexibility to participate in emergency and winter maintenance services, including out-of-hours working
Experience in areas such as drainage, concreting, kerbing, block laying, slabbing, road signs, patching, pothole repairs, road gritting or general finishing works would be advantageous.
Relevant Qualifications May Include
- NRSWA
- CSCS
- First Aid
- Lantra T1 and T2
- Abrasive Wheels
- Manual Handling
- Banksman training
Additional qualifications in winter maintenance, plant operation, safe digging, excavation, confined spaces or commercial vehicle driving would also be beneficial. Training may be provided for essential role requirements.
