About Marwood Hill Gardens

Nestled in the heart of North Devon, Marwood Hill Garden is a hidden gem. Home to four National Plant Heritage collections, several Champion trees, Marwood Hill Garden was the winner for two prestigious awards at Hampton Court in 2022. We are a private valley garden which spans over 20-acres and showcases three stunning lakes, rare trees & shrubs, and colourful surprises throughout each season.

The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a hands-on gardener to work alongside the existing small gardening team in maintaining and developing our beautiful and innovative gardens. The key focus of the role is taking pride in ensuring that the gardens are beautifully presented and well kept.

The ideal candidate will love working outdoors in all weathers, have a keen eye for detail and want to achieve excellent results. A good knowledge of plants, garden practices, use of garden machinery and have proven general horticultural skills. They will work to a high standard and ideally be a keen, knowledgeable plants person. Due to the physicality of the role, the candidate needs to be physically fit.

This role is in addition to the existing team, and will be 2-3 days per week, working alongside one of our long-time gardeners. The aim is this role will become a full-time role over the following 12 months. You'll be working alongside the garden team, working not only with your colleagues but our amazing team of volunteers as well. You will help to organise and instruct volunteers so that work is conducted safely and professionally.

This is a fantastic opportunity for a driven hands-on gardener with a real passion for horticulture looking for a long term and rewarding role on a beautiful estate.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • All aspects of the overall maintenance of the garden including digging
  • Attention to detail and taking a pride in ensuring that the gardens are beautifully presented & well kept.
  • Pest and weed control
  • Propagation, feeding and nurturing
  • Pruning trees and shrubs/ hedge cutting
  • Planting design and techniques
  • Understanding of individual plant needs/ watering etc
  • Helping others with their areas where needed

Ideal applicants will display the following:

  • Real passion for gardening/ plants and customer service
  • Formal horticulture qualifications, for example, RHS or similar preferred or good experience or knowledge and willingness to learn
  • Work within budgets for equipment, materials and plants
  • Ability to work independently as well as being a team player
  • To have an enthusiastic attitude, be friendly and welcoming to the visitors and volunteers
  • A full UK driver's licence is required as we are based in a rural location
  • Chainsaw certification (CS30/31) and spray certificates (PA1/PA6) though desirable is not essential. Training would be provided.
  • Happy to work some weekends (time off in lieu will be provided)
  • Confidence to explore and execute planting ideas and innovate landscaping themes.
