About The Role
HF Mencap is looking for a reliable and enthusiastic Gardening Volunteer to help maintain the outdoor spaces at our sites in Hammersmith & Fulham.
Our gardens provide a welcoming environment for our clients, staff, volunteers and visitors. We are looking for someone who enjoys gardening and would like to use their skills to help keep our outdoor areas safe, tidy and well maintained throughout the year.
This is a flexible volunteering opportunity that may suit someone who enjoys working outdoors, wants to support their local community, or is looking to develop their gardening skills and experience while making a positive difference.
What You Will Be Doing
- Help maintain the gardens and outdoor spaces at our HF Mencap sites.
- Carry out general gardening tasks such as weeding, planting, watering, pruning and tidying.
- Help keep pathways and outdoor areas safe, clean and free from hazards.
- Report any maintenance or health and safety concerns to a member of staff.
- Use gardening tools and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Support with other gardening-related activities agreed.

Essential
Who We're Looking For
- An interest in gardening and maintaining outdoor spaces.
- Reliable and able to volunteer independently.
- A positive and friendly attitude.
- Comfortable carrying out practical gardening activities, which may include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, digging and lifting or moving light gardening materials and equipment.
- Ability to work well with staff, volunteers, visitors and the people we support.
- Willing to follow HF Mencap’s health and safety procedures and guidance.
- Willing to undertake the required DBS check as part of the volunteer recruitment process.
Desirable
- Previous gardening or grounds maintenance experience.
- Some knowledge of plants and gardening tasks.
- Experience volunteering or working within the charity or community sector.
- Awareness of health and safety when using gardening tools and equipment.

- Interview & Induction: Shortlisted volunteers will be invited to an interview to discuss the opportunity, their interests and suitability for the role. Those selected to volunteer with us will complete an induction and any relevant training before starting.
