Summary
Hackney Housing is on the lookout for a skilled Gas Engineer to become a part of its Housing Repairs and Maintenance Team. This role involves providing top-notch reactive, planned, and cyclical maintenance services across residential properties, public buildings, and associated assets in the Borough. The ideal candidate will perform a variety of gas servicing, repair, maintenance, and installation tasks, ensuring all work meets safety standards, efficiency, and compliance with current regulations and Council guidelines. A customer-oriented approach, along with extensive technical expertise and experience in both occupied and unoccupied properties, is essential for success in this position.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform servicing, repairs, maintenance, and installation of gas heating and hot water systems.
- Conduct annual gas servicing in accordance with the Council's Gas Servicing Programme.
- Diagnose and repair faults in gas appliances, boilers, and heating systems.
- Install and replace gas boilers, fires, warm air units, and balanced flue heaters.
- Service and repair central heating systems, hot water systems, circulation pumps, motorised valves, radiators, heating controls, and pipework.
- Drain, recommission, and power flush heating systems.
- Replace immersion heaters and related components.
- Carry out minor plumbing, electrical, and finishing tasks.
- Complete making-good works after repairs and installations.
- Work at heights using scaffolding, ladders, towers, and access equipment.
- Accurately assess, diagnose, and determine appropriate repair solutions.
- Ensure properties are left clean, safe, and tidy after work completion.
- Interact professionally with residents and customers.

Compliance & Administration
- Complete landlord gas safety certificates and statutory documentation.
- Record all work using PDA and IT systems.
- Ensure accurate completion of job sheets and work records.
- Maintain compliance with Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, Health & Safety Legislation, and Council Policies and Procedures.
- Keep ACS qualifications and relevant certifications up to date.
- Ensure gas analysers, meters, and testing equipment are calibrated and certified.
- Maintain imprest van stock levels.
- Engage in training and continuous professional development.
Vehicle & Equipment Responsibilities
- Use a Hackney Housing vehicle to visit properties throughout the Borough.
- Conduct routine vehicle safety inspections and maintenance checks.
- Ensure all vehicles, tools, and equipment are properly maintained and secured.
- Complete associated vehicle and equipment documentation.
Essential Requirements
- Current and valid ACS Gas Qualifications.
- Extensive experience as a Gas Engineer in servicing, repairs, and installations.
- Experience with domestic gas boilers, heating systems, hot water systems, and gas appliances.
- Knowledge of Gas Safety Regulations and industry standards.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve faults independently.
- Competence in plumbing and basic multi-trade repairs.
- Experience in completing gas safety certification and compliance paperwork.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
- Full UK Driving Licence.

- Experience in Local Authority or Social Housing environments.
- Multi-skilled trade experience.
- Experience mentoring apprentices or junior operatives.
- Familiarity with handheld PDA or mobile workforce systems.
