Reports to: Head Janitor
Job Location: The Glasgow Academy
Job Hours: 42.5 hours per week, plus one Saturday in every four weeks
We are recruiting for a Gate and Crossing Attendant to provide a high-quality site support service across the School, helping to ensure that the school estate is safe, secure, clean, well maintained and fit for purpose.
The postholder will have an important role in supporting the security of the school during normal operating hours. This includes maintaining a visible presence on campus, undertaking agreed security checks and responding appropriately to alarms, incidents and other issues arising during normal school hours.
The role requires a proactive approach, good judgement and a strong sense of responsibility for the school buildings and grounds.
Key Responsibilities
Security
- Maintain a visible presence on the school campus.
- Undertake regular security checks of designated buildings, grounds, gates, doors and other access points.
- Respond promptly and appropriately to security alarms, fire alarms and other alerts in accordance with school procedures.
- Investigate reported security concerns and escalate any suspected break-in, unauthorised access, damage or other incident immediately to the appropriate manager or emergency service.
- Monitor access to the campus and challenge or report unauthorised persons in accordance with school procedures.
- Ensure that keys, access cards, security devices and other equipment are properly controlled and secured.
- Report any defects or failures affecting site security, including damaged doors, locks, gates, lighting, fencing or CCTV equipment.
- Maintain an appropriate level of vigilance when on campus, particularly during morning drop off, break times and end of day pick-ups.
- Support the school’s emergency response arrangements when required.
- Liaise with the Head Janitor and other relevant staff regarding security concerns.
- Open and secure buildings in accordance with agreed procedures. (Saturday shift only).

Fire Safety
- Carry out routine checks relating to fire safety as directed in designated areas.
- Ensure fire exits, escape routes and fire doors remain clear and unobstructed.
- Respond to fire alarms in accordance with the school’s fire procedures.
- Support fire drills and emergency evacuations as required.
- Never compromise fire safety arrangements when carrying out security or other duties.
- Identify and report defects, hazards, damage and maintenance requirements.
- Assist with setting up and clearing rooms and facilities for school activities and events during weekend rotation.
- Ensure external areas are safe, tidy and appropriately maintained.
- Maintain agreed standards of cleanliness in designated areas.

Contractors and Visitors
- Provide appropriate access to authorised contractors and visitors.
- Ensure contractors follow agreed site procedures and are appropriately signed in/out where required.
- Report any concerns regarding contractors, visitors or unauthorised activity.
- Ensure contractors do not gain access to areas of the school without appropriate authorisation.
Health and Safety
- Work in accordance with the school’s Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- Take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others.
- Report hazards, accidents, incidents and near misses promptly.
Communication and Reporting
- Maintain effective communication with the Head Janitor and members of the team.
- Report significant incidents, security concerns, damage, defects or emergencies promptly.
- Communicate professionally with staff, pupils, parents, contractors and visitors.
- Escalate matters outside their authority or competence rather than attempting to resolve them independently.
Crossing Attendant
- Cross all pupils and visitors throughout the day.
