Roles and Responsibilities
In the 12-month Software Engineering Placement, you'll gain invaluable skills by working as part of a team during part of (or multiple parts) the Development Life Cycle. Depending on your skillset and role requirements, you will develop your programming languages skills in (but not limited to) Java, C, C++, C#, Python, Raspberry Pi and/or Arduino.
You could be analyzing requirements, designing an application, or defining a test specification or supporting configuration management, database development and system monitoring, engaging with internal and external customers and third-party vendors.
We have several different types of roles in different teams:
On Wing Technology (Bristol)
- Developing intuitive, responsive user interfaces for aerospace applications using modern web technologies.
- Design and implement user-facing features with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
- Work closely with UI/UX designers to turn wireframes into high-quality code and ensure designs are technically feasible.
- Collaborate with back-end developers to integrate front-end components.
- Participate in agile practices (sprint planning, reviews, retrospectives).
- Engage in code reviews and best practices.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues.
- Stay current with emerging software development trends and technologies.
Software Engineering (Cheltenham)
- Use good engineering practice and AI tools to improve project outcomes across Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
- Strengthen code quality by following agreed coding standards.
- Actively participate in code reviews and suggest maintainability improvements.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by engaging in team retrospectives and capturing changes.
- Build systems thinking by joining cross-team projects.
- Explore and share advances in tools, frameworks, and AI for engineering.
- Use AI-assisted tools to generate and refine test ideas and documentation.
- Apply AI to summarise technical articles and documentation for the team.
Software Tools (Cheltenham)
- Maintains, supports, and improves the engineering toolchains used across NPI projects.
- Learn the toolchains, contribute to support and enhancement work, and develop through hands-on projects, mentorship, and training.
- Optimise day-to-day use of engineering tools (issue triage, root cause analysis, resolution).
- Implement and test enhancements to improve usability, reliability, and performance.
- Translate stakeholder requests into requirements, design changes, implementation, and verification.
- Document configurations, changes, known issues, and test evidence according to engineering policies.
- Prepare and present technical findings and status updates.
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
- Provide timely updates on risks, issues, and progress.

Test Systems (Cheltenham)
- Train up to be safe in Lab and Production areas.
- Learn full software development lifecycle processes and adhere to them.
- Track and deliver software releases on time & identify improvements to projects.
Engineering Operations Power portfolio (Cheltenham)
- Provide support across digital transformation activities.
- Help run an effective operating rhythm by preparing reports and dashboards.
- Manage digital reporting tools, dashboards, and web apps.
- Support the implementation of new digital tools.
- Track and administer digital transformation projects and other improvement activities.
- Document business data sources.
- Contribute to defining a future data analytics strategy for Engineering Operations.
- Engage cross-functionally, facilitating process reviews and improvements.
- Build strong relationships across the organisation.
You will be guided by structured goals and objectives and will have responsibility to deliver on inspiring projects supported by your People Leader and team around you. We will guide you throughout the year to ensure you make the best of your GE Aerospace experience. Your People Leader will offer coaching and mentoring, and you will be provided with the opportunity to connect with other placement students across the UK.
This opportunity is offered in our Bristol (Bristol Robotic Services) and Cheltenham sites, during the process we will ask you to share your location and role preferences.
GE Aerospace, Bristol Robotic Services (BRS)
GE Aerospace, Bristol Robotic Services (BRS) is a small tight-knit office located in Bristol, South West England. We are a team of ~50 talented, dedicated, and hardworking employees who collaborate to solve very interesting challenges in the aerospace industry. Every day at BRS is unique; you will be presented with exciting technical problems to solve and be given the space to innovate bespoke solutions. Given the small size of the company, it is very clear to see the impact your work makes, so if you are someone who grabs opportunity with both hands, you will find your time here very rewarding.
We are looking for high-energy, self-motivated individuals with the vision to help carry our business forward. The work is academically rigorous, intellectually demanding, and requires exceptional problem-solving, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. That being said, we are a very collaborative bunch so we don’t need you to be an expert in everything, we have experts here who will mentor and coach you into developing the skills you need.
Our offices are in Bristol in the South West of England – an area fast becoming a major centre for robotics. The South West is a beautiful place to live, with good infrastructure, great universities, and fabulous beaches not far away from the city of Bristol. Our offices are located a few minutes’ walk from Filton Abbey Wood Station and on a regular bus route.
GE Aerospace based in Cheltenham

This placement role is an intended pipeline to our Edison Engineering Development Programme (EEDP) based in Cheltenham. Towards the end of the placement year, we will open graduate applications for our current placement students with an aim to securing a role prior to the end of their placement year.
Meaning, you can head back into your final year at university with a graduate job offer in hand. All you need to do is secure a 2:1 degree or above!

Qualifications / Requirements
- Currently studying a Computer Science/ Web Development/ Artificial Intelligence/ Data Science/ Mathematics/ Human-Computer Interaction/Graphic Design/ Embedded Software or related Bachelor’s or integrated Master’s Degree
- Passionate about Software Engineering
- Programming experience in at least one of C#, Java, or Python, with willingness to work across more than one language
- On course to achieve a 2:1 degree or above
- To be in your penultimate year of study and returning to education post placement
