Bede House Association is a multi-purpose local charity supporting communities across Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, working exclusively in the Southwark area. Since its founding in 1938, Bede has focused on some of the most pressing issues affecting local residents, including domestic abuse, LGBT hate crimes, youth support, and services for people with learning disabilities. The organization provides safe, accessible support to individuals and families experiencing crisis or discrimination. Staff work closely with local partners and community members to promote safety, inclusion, and long-term wellbeing. Applicants will join a committed team driven by social justice and community empowerment.
Role Description
This is a full-time, on-site role based in Southwark for a Gender-Based Abuse Advocate. The advocate will provide trauma-informed support to people experiencing gender-based abuse, including risk assessment, safety planning, and practical guidance on housing, legal options, and financial support.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

- Casework management
- One-to-one support sessions
- Crisis intervention
- Referral to specialist services
The role also involves:
- Maintaining accurate case notes
- Preparing reports
- Working collaboratively with partner agencies such as police, health services, and other charities
- Contributing to outreach, awareness-raising activities, and internal safeguarding processes to strengthen community understanding and prevention of gender-based abuse
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience supporting survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, or other forms of gender-based abuse, ideally in a community or charity setting.
- Strong skills in casework, risk assessment, and safety planning, with the ability to manage complex, sensitive situations and maintain professional boundaries.
- Excellent communication and active listening skills, including the ability to build trust, provide trauma-informed support, and advocate effectively with partner agencies.
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures, relevant legislation, and local support networks, including housing, legal, and health services.
- Ability to maintain accurate records, use case management systems, and handle confidential information in line with data protection requirements.
- Experience working with diverse communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals and people with learning disabilities, with a strong commitment to equality, inclusion, and anti-discriminatory practice.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize workloads, work under pressure, and respond to crisis situations calmly.
- Relevant training or qualification in social work, counselling, advocacy, criminology, or a related field (or equivalent experience); knowledge of trauma-informed and person-centered approaches is highly beneficial.
- Willingness to work flexibly when required, collaborate closely with colleagues, and participate in supervision and ongoing professional development.
