Job Overview
We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity for an on-site General Building Operative at HMYOI Swinfen Hall.
Standard hours of work: 39 hours per week
Schedule:
- Monday - Thursday: 07.45-16.45 (1 hour lunch)
- Friday: 07.15-15.45 (1 hour lunch)
- 1 in 3 weekends: 08.00-16.00
- On-call rota: 1 in every 9 weeks, subject to change
- Additional allowance: 15% of basic salary
About the Role
At Amey, we support our justice client, His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), by providing safe, clean, and efficient prisons. By leveraging our facilities management expertise, we ensure the smooth operation of 60 secure premises across England and Wales.
The General Building Operative plays a crucial role in ensuring that planned and reactive maintenance work within the prisons is carried out safely, compliantly, and timely.
Responsibilities
- Work in a team to provide general maintenance tasks and support tradespeople on site.
- Provide a professional assistance service to those requesting support, including contractor escorting duties when required.
- Complete tasks associated with DIY such as decorating, hanging notice boards, building furniture, and repairing items around the prison.
- Check appliances, fittings, and the general environment to ensure they are in good working order and report all defects to the Team Leader.
- Maintain general good housekeeping, including litter picking and landscaping around the grounds if required.
- Perform all other FM duties as directed by the team manager.
- Support both local and business zero carbon programs, working towards zero carbon in a strategic and lean manner as appropriate.
- Ensure H&S standards are achieved across the contract.

Requirements
- Solid experience in DIY/general building maintenance.
- CITB relevant certification or equivalent is desired but not essential.
- Willingness to learn new skills.
- Ability to work well in a team.
Note: Prison Security Clearance will be required (Amey will support you through this process).
