General Commercial Solicitor – Screwfix
About the Role
Join Screwfix as a General Commercial Solicitor and play an integral role within our high-performing Commercial Legal Team. You’ll deliver sharp, commercially focused legal advice that keeps the business moving fast but responsibly.
You’ll be a key partner to the business, leading on major commercial contracts, managing legal and regulatory risk, and working closely with senior leaders, procurement, operations, and cross-functional teams to drive confident, commercially smart decisions.

Responsibilities
Commercial Contracts
- Manage legal risk in commercial relationships with:
- Suppliers for goods and services (non-stock)
- Good for resale (stock suppliers)
- Including significant tenders, contracts, and disputes
- Draft and negotiate a wide range of complex commercial contracts, including:
- Intragroup agreements
- Logistics, warehousing, and fulfilment
- Supply of goods and services
- Technology and software
- Non-disclosure agreements (NDAs)
- Support contract lifecycle management (renewals, updates, dispute avoidance)
- Advise on contract structure and risks aligned with commercial strategy for business teams
- Develop and ensure compliance with templates, standard terms, and playbooks
Legal Advisory & Risk Management
- Provide expert legal support for:
- Strategic business-critical projects
- Ad hoc legal queries across commercial law issues
- Work closely with colleagues across the Kingfisher Group and external counsel in a cost-efficient, targeted manner
- Ensure risks are escalated and managed to enable optimal commercial decision-making
Governance, Compliance & Regulatory Support
- Ensure data protection compliance in contractual relationships
- Provide legal support and advice on data protection issues
- Advise on regulatory law (including competition and consumer)
- Support brand protection (intellectual property)
Additional Duties
- Identify innovative methods to achieve process efficiencies
- Support dispute management (pre-litigation) and assist the legal team as needed
- Provide training to Screwfix teams on:
- Contract risk
- Legal compliance
- Critical legal processes
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- UK-qualified solicitor with 4+ years’ post-qualification experience (PQE)
- Proven track record in private practice and/or in-house on commercial law matters impacting an FMCG business
- Expertise in contract law with:
- Superlative drafting and negotiation skills
- Experience across broad, complex commercial contracts
- Strong knowledge of data protection law and information governance
- Desirable: In-depth experience in competition and regulatory law
- Excellent written and oral communication, adaptable to different audiences
- Ability to balance legal risk with business priorities
- Strong influencing skills, with a focus on clarifying complex concepts in plain English for stakeholders
- Proven ability to negotiate (both contentious and non-contentious) with counterparties
