General Foreman – Highways
Location: Avonmouth to Hotwells (A4 Corridor), Bristol
Permanent, Full Time
We are seeking an experienced General Foreman to join a major £13m highways improvement scheme along the A4. This is a high-profile project covering a 7-mile stretch of road, involving complex logistics, heavy traffic management, and delivery within a constrained corridor.
The works include:
- Junction improvements
- Drainage upgrades
- Carriageway resurfacing
- Significant traffic management on a tight urban route
This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in delivering vital infrastructure in partnership with Bristol City Council.
The Role
As General Foreman, you will take responsibility for managing construction activities across a designated section of works, ensuring delivery against safety, quality, programme, and environmental objectives.
You will lead site teams, coordinate subcontractors, and ensure smooth day-to-day operations on a technically challenging and logistically demanding scheme.

Health, Safety & Environment
- Lead a safety-first culture across site
- Ensure full compliance with HS&E legislation and project plans
- Maintain safe working environments, access, and welfare facilities
Site & Project Management
- Manage daily site operations and coordinate subcontractors
- Develop and implement short-term programmes from the master schedule
- Identify and manage changes, risks, and site issues proactively
- Ensure works are delivered in line with method statements and targets
Quality & Delivery
- Conduct inspections and ensure adherence to quality standards
- Implement robust site procedures and continuous improvement
- Monitor productivity and drive performance against programme
Commercial & Resource Management
- Plan and manage plant, materials, and labour requirements
- Monitor costs and take action to maintain budget control
- Maintain accurate site records, reports, and diaries
Engineering & Problem Solving
- Work with engineers and designers to resolve on-site challenges
- Contribute to innovative solutions and value engineering
- Ensure best practice and efficient construction methodologies

- Has strong experience in highways or civil engineering projects
- Is confident managing complex, traffic-heavy environments
- Demonstrates excellent leadership and communication skills
- Is proactive, organised, and solutions-focused
- Has a strong understanding of health & safety and quality standards
