Consultant in General Histopathology
An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in General Histopathology to join an established and expanding pathology team in the West Midlands.
The successful candidate will provide an independent general histopathology reporting service, working collaboratively with consultant colleagues and laboratory staff to deliver a high-quality diagnostic service.
The department has a substantial workload and operates a partially subspecialised model, making this opportunity particularly well-suited to a Consultant with broad experience in general histopathology and an interest in developing or supporting a specialist area.
The Role
The post holder will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive general histopathology service, with work allocated through the department's partially subspecialised model.

- Renal Pathology
- Dermatopathology
- Uropathology
- Respiratory Pathology
- Head & Neck Pathology
- Gynaecological Pathology
- Gastrointestinal Pathology
- Non-Gynaecological Cytology
The department particularly welcomes candidates with experience or an interest in Dermatopathology, Uropathology, Gynaecological Pathology, and Gastrointestinal Pathology. Experience in non-gynaecological cytopathology would also be welcomed.
The partially subspecialised model is particularly suited to candidates with wide-ranging general histopathology experience.

Main Duties
The successful candidate will:
- Independently undertake general histopathology reporting.
- Contribute to surgical histopathology reporting and specimen cut-up.
- Support the department's non-gynaecological cytology service where appropriate.
- Participate in relevant multidisciplinary team meetings.
- Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement.
- Support the supervision and training of postgraduate trainees and junior medical staff.
- Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Contribute to research and service development.
- Work collaboratively with consultant colleagues, biomedical scientists, and other laboratory staff.
- Maintain high standards of professional practice and continuing professional development.
Department & Facilities
The department provides a substantial general histopathology service, receiving approximately 30,000 histology requests and 42,000 specimens each year, as well as approximately 2,000 non-gynaecological cases.

The department also supports 9 multidisciplinary team meetings, allocated based on individual specialists' interests and job-plan commitments.

Teaching, Audit & Research

Person Specification
Essential Requirements
- Full and Specialist GMC Registration with a licence to practise, or eligibility for Specialist Registration within six months of interview.
- UK-trained applicants must hold CCT or be within 6 months of obtaining CCT on the date of the interview.
- Non-UK-trained applicants must demonstrate equivalence to UK CCT.
- FRCPath or equivalent.
- Broad experience in general histopathology.
- High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty.
- Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Good written and spoken English.
- Commitment to continuing professional development.
Desirable Experience
The department would particularly welcome candidates with experience or an interest in:
- Gastrointestinal Pathology
- Respiratory Pathology
- Dermatopathology
- Non-Gynaecological Cytopathology
- Renal Pathology
- Gynaecological Pathology
Experience in management, service development, NHS systems, research, and relevant publications would also be advantageous.
